Dear all,
seems to me that as Steven Hand said the footwear is somewhat irrelevant
compared to the footwork. (I'm paraphrasing but it get's the point across).
When your foot goes down on the floor - whether in a hard impact or in slow
motion the question is how well articulated the foot is, if the weight is
distributed evenly across the width of the foot, if the knees are aligned
with the direction of the feet, if the spine is active and aligned centrally
with only a natural curve, and so on and so on.
A performer from, say, the Peking opera, will be able to jump great heights
and land hard on a concrete floor without sustaining damage even though they
wear only Kung-Fu slippers or even bare feet. It is all a question of
technique and practice.
Certain types of footwear will help or hinder certain types of footwork.
Technique is more important than any equipment, but as any decent actor will
tell you the right costume will lead you to the right movement.
Ultimately the biggest lesson to learn here is that one should not come to
this group mail declaring hard and fast rules unless you're willing to be
torn apart by people who have been doing it longer/harder/better than you.
Kind of like drawing a sword really.
All the best
Al.
