Cards for forum users? How about some ideas?

I've been reading a thread lately about some sports getting on ESPN, while we aren't. I'm finding that there are a few people.... well ... one person that I'm thinking of, who continues to flame away without regard for his ignorance.

Can't we have some kind of card system so that people like that, who are only causing problems, can be sut off for a time? Is that too much?

There are some threads that have a single person who just stirs up crap. I know that it is hard to keep flamers off the site, but there must be something that can be done?

Craig I'm sure you've had to deal with this in the past, but what is the policy here?

Thanks!

Thinking about a "karma" type system, but it's a lower priority right now.

Regarding the thread that you reference - the person has kept the comments to that one thread, so that's not as much of an issue.

I think that rating the quality of individual posts may be a good thing. I just got the board back to stable though, so I don't want to go putting in too many modifications.

Good suggestion though - I'll keep it on the list.

Craig

actualy i m going to do a best off of the best flaming posts...
some pople really need to chill.
i m a moderator oon escrime-info (french version of fencing.net)

we usually send PM to people and they calm down, because evrybody in france knows one another.

we recently created our water-cooler section because too many junk-subjects were created. the only difference is that our water-cooler subjects have to be fencing-related

peace

Ruko - Since you are working with escrime-info, can you keep me up to date when some interesting news gets posted there? I don't speak/read French, so about the only thing I get out of the site are the pictures.

Cheers,
Craig

Craig
I just read "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom" by Cory Doctorow:
http://craphound.com/down/
Its downloadable for free or you can pay for print. Anyway its a sci -fi story , some time in the future, when energy is free, money becomes useless, and everyone has embedded computers and network access in their heads. Instead of money, people rely on their personal worth, as measured by respect given by others, good deeds, and positive input into the society. If you are an ***, take advantage of people or are dishonest you loose credits. You can easily "ping" someone as they interact with you, see what their standing is, what their particular affiliations and orientations are and base your interactions accordingly. If for example you have a positive interaction with a high standing individual or group you gain a lot of status. If you cheat someone you lose status, but you'd lose less if you ripped off a low life than if you scammed an upstanding member of the community.

Its an interesting concept, one that might be suited to an experiment in a virtual community such as this board. Though it does exist in a way already with labels like "senior member", "expert", the number of posts, and the ability to ignore people. And as in real life, respect is earned (or lost) through familiarity with people as they post more and more.

A little bar graph next to the avitar might provide some additional insight into the merit of one's words, without having to read weeks and weeks of posts to get a feel for a persons veracity. But how and who is to be the judge?

- let me pre-emptively apologize for this long and rambling post... I guess the idea struck a chord.

The idea of "karma" has been discussed before. One way is to turn on member ratings, where you just do a 1-5 rating of members, but that's a more steady-state thing. With the "karma" model (which is used at some other sites including slashdot) you can add and subtract points based on interactions and even key up some automated triggers.

I just need to be aware of all the possibilities for abuse and see if the potential benefits are worth the "karma brownnosing" that may occur.

on the UK forum a card system has been set-up

if you repeatedly go off topic, or just post rubbish you get warned through a PM

yellow card 1st warning
red card 2nd warning
black card (thrown out of the forum)

I like the karma system tho

I am a moderator for the Spanish webforum

http://www.esgrimamex.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

Our system is member rating by users (0-5 stars). We also PM first and if repeated offenses occur, we then start with message editing. If that is not sufficient, we "chill out" a thread by a closing temporarily, typically a 2-day moratorium, and lastly, we close a thread. Although we have never thrown out a member, peer-pressure appears to have a significant effect.
