| The screamers came over to sabre from foil (wasn't it the women foilists who earned the Olympic award for screaming in that humor piece?), but since there are more frequent actions in sabre you notice it more.

| There needs to be more "booyah"ish yelling. Now that would be cool.
Anyway, does anyone know any Spanish cries? More French? |

| I've also found that giggling really confuses your opponent. I do it on accident sometimes, and I get some pretty funny reactions.

| I only scream after I hit. Sometimes I scream when I am fencing like crap and really frustrated. Why waste energy yelling when you are still fencing? Why warn your opponent that you are about to do something? |

Craig | I fenced a completly obnoxious woman (who reported with a VERY illegal lame she then wore in the next bout after being told she couldn't wear it, but that's a different thread) who would scream this high piercing YES on every single forward movement of attack, not to mention an extra now and then when ever close in to my ear. After a while, I started giving back a NO, regardless of if I had the touch or not. Obnoxious girl didn't shake hands at the end either, just gave back a me a final NO at the end of the bout. |

| I watched a pair of high-ranked fencers bouting for the top place in epee at a tournament I attended. As many of us knew them personally, we were trying not to laugh too hard, but...
Well, the way it would go was something like fencer A fleches fencer B, NEITHER lands a hit. They stop, almost back to back, scream the same scream, and whip off their masks.

| I believe every fencer who engages in such silliness ought to be presented with a videotape of themselves doing it at the end of the tournament. A viewing or two might prove salutory. I can scarcely believe they carry on like such nincompoops KNOWING how they look.... |

| Some cries in Spanish, huh?
- the common "toma!", means take that!
- "servido!", means you're served, like when the waiter gives you what you ordered.

As far as counter yells go... I think I heard this story from Austin this year: A fencer who yelled "Yes Yes Yes" after a touch he thought was his, looking at the ref, who calmly replied "No No No" and then called the action (which was not his). | I saw something like that in one of the saber pools...don't know what division. |

Ihray!
EEEEYAH! - when you've won the bout
A very high pitched HOO! i really need to get rid of it.
YEAH! - my personal favorite
OH Yeah! - when you have just pulled off a flick to the knuckle
Yuh huh - when the oponnent is doing precicely what you want them to.
S. Shaeed did all kinds of crazy yells that i can't effectively put into typing so i'm not going to try.
A very high pitched screech by Leslie Lampman, if you've ever been in the same building with her during a competition you know what i'm talking about.

I guess the director didn't see it.

| Yea ive seen that happen to really pissed off fenciners, normally they're just given a warning... i mean... Since they've lost the bout anyway, whats the point of making a fuss about it. |

| ive seen someone get black carded for refusing to shake hands after a bout, but he lost anyway so he was already out. He changed now and is somewhat ashamed of the reckless behavior of his youth. |

| "Et La" is my favorite, basically because I'm telling my opponent what I'm doing, and when it scores it's good to know that simple attacks work.
"Oap!"
"Yah"
But mostly I fence quietly.
And about that victory yell at the halt... I agree with Inquartata that a video tape should be made for some.
