There's been a lot of questions/comments posted on the "Questions Questions" thread and I wanted to put up a different thread to post my observations.
Here is a summary of the questions/comments raised:
- Some people felt that the rules were unclear. I recently went to take another look at the rules page, but it is currently a blank html page. This happens with web sites, so either the page got hosed, or clarifications are being written. I don't know which.
- There have been questions about Alan B's previous activities and interaction with the USFA. Any comments on that are speculation unless you get a response from Alan or the USFA. Overall, I don't think this point is a concern.
- Questions have been raised about the overall business plan. I agree with David here in not disclosing too much. He says that he's got it covered, and that's fine. I would not expect him to disclose his business plan.
What I want to concern myself with are the following questions:
- Will the running clock be handled like the Titan Games (15 seconds between touches/actions or a card given), or is some other enforcement in place?
- It's epee, and low level epee is almost the worst fencing event to watch. What "marquee" names are lined up / invited to this event. (Having a couple of "names" confirmed would be great PR for the event and would entice some other fencers to sign up.)
- Given that the goal is to have a compelling TV event, I am curious as to why a pool of 8 was chosen instead of a single elimination bracket. You could run the bouts the same way (2-1-2) and give each bout even more tension. Most sports commentators agree that what makes "March Madness" such a great TV spectacle is the single elimination aspect - every match means something and adds to the drama. (I don't expect an answer since it may be part of the business plan, just curious.)
That said, if you're an epee fencer and Charlotte is close enough to you to fit in your driving range for attending tournaments, then why not try it out? Everyone has concerns about the tournament. I have concerns about how well any tournament will be run.

If someone who attends happens to be a member of the forum, post an event report and tell us how it went.
I'll reserve judgement until the event actually happens and we can see the results (in the form of an event report and/or some sample footage.)
Cheers,
Craig
