power supply for Prieur Model 8001 scoring machine 18V vs 16V

My club (Halberstadt in San Francisco) has an old Prieur scoring machine,
bright orange cover, model 8001. It takes a DC 18 volt power supply, with
the standard 5.5 mm outside, 2.1 mm inside male connector. We think we
found the original power supply, which is marked 500 mA.

I have an old IBM laptop power supply with this connector, but it is 16
volt, and about 1300 mA. A quick test on the bench at home seems to
indicate reasonable function. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this
power supply might work OK.

Check the voltages. A general rule of thumb is it should be within 10%.
As your power supply is 2 volts less it's a toss up but probably won't
hurt to try. Something to double check though is the polarity at the
connector. You'll find that for much computer equipment there isn't
a standard. And if your power supply isn't adequate then hit the
computer flea market down at Foothill college this coming saturday.
It starts in the wee hours and ends by noon. But small power supplies
can generally be had in almost any voltage for a dollar or two.
