Well, Peter Jennings is not the only one who can't tell the weapons apart. One of the 14 historical images has the caption:

"Barcelona, 2 August 1992. Individual epee. Jean-François Lamour (FRA), 3rd."

however, they clearly have sabres, full arm-length lames, and wires going to their masks.

You would think the Olympics would get it right... I'm going to attach the image if I can.
