The best sabre blades/weapons is a matter of personal opinion. Most vendors just assemble the parts and then sell them. It is up to you to balance it to your liking. I personally like the PBT blades. They are light for good blade actions and stiff enough to take a good parry.

As for lames and masks, I like the stainless steel lames. I don't have much confidence in the cheap masks sold by BG, Blade, or PC. We ordered some a few years ago for the university and it was scary just to punch test them. Go with the Uhlman, Allstar, or PBT.

There never was a time, in my opinion, when some way could not be found to prevent the drawing of the sword.

Ummm...I haven't bought a complete sabre in years. A blade here, a guard there, a grip and pommel somewhere else---all depending on availability, feel ( I usually buy at tournaments ) and price...

I like the second-to-cheapest blades from Blue Gauntlet. Apart from those, I normally go primarily by price.

I have only limited experience with sabres (started fencing that weapon just one year ago), but I prefer to build my sabres myself from parts selected at tournaments.

Since I live in Germany I bought only from Uhlmann or Allstar so far.

Regarding blades I have used the Uhlmann Ultra (bought three of them during 2002, one broke in the foible after a few training fights against a heavy hitter, one broke when I tried bending the tang a bit more and did that the wrong way, and one survives, but is seldom used lately, because those blades are quite stiff and heavy), then the BF FIE Maraging (my favourite, I now have two of those and really like them, because they are durable and elastic), and one of the cheap noname Uhlmann blades (it developed a curve like a cavalry sabre after a while, but was quite nice to fence with; a while ago I sold it built into a steam sabre). Lately I got another Uhlmann Ultra at a tournament, but this one is a lot less stiff than the older batch. I did not fence with it yet, though.

Regarding grips I only use the leatherbound ones lately. It may sound funny, but I only buy those at tournaments, since I need to feel the grips until I find the one I am comfortable with.

For guards I prefer Allstar over Uhlmann. I have no experience with any other suppliers yet.

On the issue of grips I have to throw my support fully behind PBT.
Rubber over metal, the most solid feeling grip out there. Also one of the thinnest, making it the easiest to control. The part that fits in your palm when you hold it is rounded, the top where your thumb rests is flat.

It just feels right..I cant imagine fencing with any other grip.

I buy my sabres from www.Duellist.com as they are good value and decent quality

standared of fencing in Ireland is such that in the early rounds of a comp you are going to get some fairly wild opponents - as the blades are cheap I can just shrug when they break.

The "set" of the blade is very pareticular to your needs/likes. try a few friends blades to see what you like best before ordering
