| USFA Congress Okay, I don't want to sound too ignorant... but I am.
Through no fault of my own, I found myself an officer in my division for the last year. Now I understand that I (and the other officers) are to be our division's reps at the USFA Congress at the Summer Nationals.
I just know there are people on this forum who have done this before, but it is all new to me.
I am curious what to expect and what is expected of me/us? What goes on at the congress and what is our purpose or duty as representatives?
Any constructive advise will be appreciated.

| First of all, all your officers are not automatically members of the Congress. The division elects the Officers AND the representative(s) to the Congress.
The number of representative you elect is based on the number of members in the division. You have at least 1 member for the first 75 and more for each 75 or major fraction of 75 (greater the 37). So if your division had less than 112, you get one member, up to 187, 2 members, 262, 3 members, etc.
Depending on who you talk to it is either a rubber stamp for the Board of Directors, a circus or something that actually gets something done. If you do go as a representative know the issues and find out what the members of your division feel about it. If you do it right, it is a whole lot of work.
Good luck.

| Sorry I should have mentioned. This is from the Bylaws, Article VII, Section 2a and Section 3.

| Expect a quick and uneventful meeting. The Congress is a fairly tame group of people who really don't wield too much power. It's a way for the BoD to throw a bone to the dog.
You'll get to elect people to the hall of fame. You get to vote on who from the congress will represent the congress in the BoD (which is the only valuable vote). Then you will briefly talk about this that and the other and the meeting is then adjourned. That's always a good thing.

| As a follow-on to EDew's post (I agree completely with his assessment BTW), for "the only valuable vote" there are 4 people elected and generally only 4-5 people running. Even this vote tends not to have much real impact.
The BOD, and more specifically, the committees of the BOD are where the actual power is held.

| Since you're talking about the US Government, I think this thread is better moved to the Water Cooler forum location.
