| You can use either spelling. I happen to prefer sabre.

| As with a lot of 'er' or 're' words:
'Saber' is American English.
'Sabre' is British.
I also prefer the look of 'sabre' but then I like the look of alot of the British spellings versus American. |

BTW, I noticed that you are also in Kansas. Do you fence at the Kansas City Fencing Center (like me) or the Fencing Athletic Center?

| "Saber" looks weird to me sometimes.
I go with "sabre" when I remember, because then it's not so strange to use a related word like sabreur ("saberer" in English).
And, is it sabreuse for female sabreurs? Or sabretrix? |

I am 14 and a half years old, fencing epee in Emmy's Tue./Thurs. 7 pm class, and my name is Lindsay Fortier. Oh, and You'll probably get Kelly as your coach- she's a great instructor! Btw, if your looking for me, I'm very tall with red hair. See ya there!

| i use sabre. it looks cooler.
i then just use "sabrist" to avoid the gender issue. it looks a little weird as sabrist (rather than saberist) however, i like consistancy |

| I think most people prefer sabre. It's certainly the most commonly used. The only time I use saber is when referring to offical things run by the USFA (eg "Coaches College level 2 Saber", etc.).
Anything officially done by the USFA will use the American spelling. Pretty much everything else will use the British spelling.

| WHEW! I am glad there was some "drift"...it scared me that there sixteen posts on the spelling of the word "sabre!"
Anyway, lfortier and s.samurai, in the future, be careful of what information you make public. It is a nice coincidence that you are in the same town, etc. However, a good rule of thumb is to always keep your name, specific location, etc. private when you post on message boards such as this one. (That is the beauty of pm and e-mail). We are all friends here, but every once in a while a weirdo stops by...
Best of luck to both of you; s.samurai, you are about to embark on a great journey! If you have any further questions about the sport, do not hesitate to ask. There is a wealth of knowledge among the members of this site.

| As a Canadian and a former colonialist, I prefer the British English spelling of SABRE. Yes, I also prefer SABREUR and , I night be wrong in this since my knowledge of French is limited to fencing French, SABREURE for the feminine gender.
As Professor Henry Higgins said, "English hasn't been used in America for a long, long time."

| "SABREURE" is not good french. it's not even bad french, it's just not french. i would guess that "sabreuse" would be the correct term, although i'm not sure.
foilist
epeeist
sabrist
