FIE Clothing Reg's

Will a jacket and knickers marked FIE 2001 be accepted at FIE sanctioned World Cups in 2003?

Does 800NT weight pass for FIE purposes?

The month and date of manufacture is check only that it exists. There is no expiration of the date. 800 Newton is required in both the jacket and plastron. M.25.3 and Apendix A.

What's the significance of "CE" on my jacket label? I've seen this, sometimes as CE Level 1 or CE Level 2.

Does this have to appear with the FIE notation on the label to be eligible for World Cups?

You will see CE on a lot of items, not just fencing. What the stamp means it meets the standards of Common Europe and can be sold there.

In fact the standards for fencing are higher in some ways then the FIE. I am not sure of this, but I believe that (as far as fencing is concerned) CE1 is for International/National Level and CE2 is for local/practice.

Goran Abrahamson, the Swedish SEMI member is also on the Fencing Committee of Common Europe.

The CE stamp is an interesting thing. I was talking to Jeff Salmon (the guy who makes the infinity lames) and he was saying that he can not get the CE stamp because the lame contains zinc, and because of some people being allergic to zinc, they (Common Europe) refuse to approve it, so Jeff is trying to figure out what he can do to get them sold in Europe. (just an interesting story which I remembered while reading this thread)

Cen 1 and 2

Hi. Cen performance level 1 is a standard based on 350 Newton minimum cloth strength, bib strength and mask mesh of about 800 Newtons. In the Uk this level (1) is required for all fencing over 13/14 years old and with size 5 blades. Cen performance level 2 is equivalent to the required F.I.E. standard 800 newton clothing , 1600 Newton Bib and mask mesh.

In order to pass the Cen testing the equipment has to meet a higher spec than the original F.I.E. standard. Testing is done after 5 washing cycles, the seams must be of a minimum strength. In general equipment marked with CEN standards are made to a higher standard than those without. However in some cases I have seen clothing marked as CEN level 1 which clearly would fail the test and has not been through the testing proceedure. Barry Paul. Leon Paul
