    I got this through e-mail:

    Dear Sir,

    Re: New product ¡§Anti-SARS Mask

¡§Anti-SARS¡¨ Mask has been developed by our company recently. The

inside pad of this mask can be detached for washing or carrying to the laundry. The bacteria and disease will no longer stay and reproduce inside the pad. So the ¡§Anti-SARS¡¨ and the others disease will not be spread by the mask.

why oh why oh why oh why

i make fun of the people at my club who are coughing...

we say that SARS has gone through most of our club.....

then again.... a really bad cough with flu-ish symptoms that involves staying home sick for a day or two HAS gone through our club...

    a mild SARS?

we think not... therefore we joke.

but i wonder if wearing silly little SARS proof masks would prevent even a little of the spread of the various viruses that are spread from fencer to fencer??

    *shrugs* i'm more than skeptical

Since SARS is caused by a virus, this mask would do little to prevent it.

However, the idea of washable pads is always welcome as a protection against fungi and bacteria which can reproduce and feed on fabrics and on human byproducts deposited inside the mask, especially if you suffer from allergies or have skin problems.

Since I have never heard of this outfit I wouldn't buy diddly from them. There are other reputable fencing suppliers who carry masks with detachable padding.

I will continue to wear my own disgusting mask, since no one else wears it but me so the bacteria and fungi are all my own.

One of my team mates spent the fall semester in hong kong and bought a few things from them (equipment bag, test box, a couple of epees)... she didn't have any problems with them (that I know of), but if I remember correctly, shipping and export charges from Hong Kong are prohibitively expensive for a US person to buy from them.

Not true, as evidenced by EDew's purchases from Esun. Shipping halfway around the world is expensive. Doesn't mean that it isn't offset by lower costs.

Now sending out SPAM (well targeted, but SPAM nonetheless) while your website is unavailable due to database updates is fairly stupid. And marketing a mask that can be easily cleaned as a way of preventing viral infection is either stupid or immoral, depending on how generous you feel like being towards them.

But don't bash them for shipping costs.... :)

I forgot about SARS. Over here in the Deep South, we're mainly thinking about West Nile. Sars seems to still be over on the other side of the planet. You know, I wonder, we sometimes think that the Japanese people go overboard with the masks and gloves in public places, but, do they have the right idea? No-one there tends to get things like SARS?

ummm....the mask will do 100% nothing to prevent the spread of SARS, remember theres this see through, mesh in front of your face, with holes in it for air to travel around, being that SARS is extreamly contagious, a little bit more bibbing, and or padding around wont help anything in any way. chance are if your gunna get SARS its not gunna be because your mask is carriying it...its cause you hung out with the wrong person at the wrong time. they arnt the first company to have removable padding, as i remember ullhman masks have that same feature right? even if you cant take the padding out, you could always just stuff your mask into your dishwasher, and wash it that way (just turn the heated drying part off) BOOM clean mask.

SARS and the fencing world, needing seriouse measures taken to prevent it???¿¿¿ BS

to add on to retarded spleen's method of cleaning a mask in a dishwasher, you can also do it in the washer. just place your mask into an old pillowcase, tie it off with a hairtie or the end of the pillow itself, and wash it with a full load of towels. just another way for those without dishwashers...but who have washing machines. of course, one can always wash a mask by hand....

I too think that since SARS is a virus, the mask will nothing at all, because its for bacteria and stuff. However, it would be good for someone who dirties their mask alot (i.e by sweating) and for clean freaks!

I'm not so worried about SARS as my own bad breath, which at times (I am ashamed to say) has caused me to halt practice and seek some desperately needed breath mints.

If we could only insert something in the masks to help with that...oh the joy!

Several mask manufacuters masks already have this feature, where the entire padding part on the inside comes out, or a majority of the inside comes out. Ullhman, and allstart do this i think, and some PBT and santelli (is that right guys? PBT and santelli?)
