    First Lesson in a Month

Hi. I have been wanting to be a fencer for a while now. And I finally got enrolled in a summer camp! I am so excited! I justed wondered if there is anything that I should know before going to my first lesson or any advice you can give me. I also have one question. In your first five lessons do you get to do any bouting or do you do drills the whole first five lesson?

Hi sabresamurai. Above all, have fun with it! Let us know how it goes, and don't forget to list any great teaching things they do...

It sounds like you're talking about classes. A fencing lesson is 1-on-1 with a coach, and is usually a bunch of structured drills. A fencing class is a bunch of people learning about fencing at the same time.

For classes, do all the normal class stuff, like listen, obey, &etc. Like Artisan says. Fencing is also very social, and it's easy to make fencing-friends if you give it a shot.

For a lesson, I'd say, reserve judgement for the first few. There can be some weird concepts in fencing, or odd exercises, but it pays off in the long term. It's okay to ask about stuff, but you want to do the talking after the lesson, so that you maximize your training time in the lesson. Stop if you feel pain. Be respectful but not passive.

    Have fun!!

If you're going to a camp I'll assume you are a younger person, still expect your legs to hurt. The postions you hold during footwork drills use muscles you are probably not even aware you have. Also, don't expect to master anything immediately. Getting forms down takes time and practice. Good Luck!
