I was there for both tournaments, and can report that A Good Time Was
Had By All, though unfortunately there weren't all that many of us.
(Where the heck were all the sabre fencers this weekend? A tournament
in DC on Saturday had *two* sabrists show. ???)
We had five women for the women's event, and all fenced each other -
this was great practice for Nationals, much mroe so than a mixed
tournament where I might end up fencing maybe 1 or 2 women if I'm
lucky. Women's sabre is different in tempo and tactics than men's
sabre, so it was great to have an opportunity to focus on my game for
*women's* sabre rather than dealing with beating both men and women.
And, of course, everyone was very nice and we had a great time -
everyone fencing hard and doing her best but also enjoying it in a
laid back atmosphere.
For the mixed open we had nine fencers - all us women stayed, and four
men joined us. We had one big pool of nine, hurray! (plus DEs,
everyone up) I really appreciated that - it made a small tournament
into a very good training opportunity simply because I got a lot of
bouts. Again, everyone very pleasant and having a good time, while
fencing hard as well.
It was a long drive for me (from Baltimore to Philly) but well worth
it - the idea of two events in one day, one women's and one mixed,
really made it worth the trip, and I had a great time and found it to
be a very good training experience. Recommended for other fencers in
the area to keep an eye out for on the schedule, for future dates.
