Philadelphia, PA, USA . . . sabre

Just wanted to let you know that this Sunday, May 18 there will be a
women's sabre tournament at 11:00 a.m. and an open mixed sabre
tournament at Fencing Academy of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA.
Directions to the club and schedule information are at
http://www.phildiv-usfa.org/index.html

If you're in the division or nearby, and you'd like a nice little
tournament for practice, come by. Especially the women! We already
have four women from FAP planning to be there for the women's
tournament, and I know there are others in the division who might come
down if they knew there were going to be more than three showing up.

As for the open, it has the potential to be a good practice, and these
days we have enough classified fencers that someone could even earn a
nice letter for themselves if we get 15.

I will definitely be there, Delia - so you can count on another body for
both tournaments! :-)

Cheers,
Holly

Great, Holly! And I'm sure Jeannine will be looking forward to
fencing you again <grin>, after the way you did such a good job of
beating her in the DE at Sectionals!

I was there for both tournaments, and can report that A Good Time Was
Had By All, though unfortunately there weren't all that many of us.
(Where the heck were all the sabre fencers this weekend? A tournament
in DC on Saturday had *two* sabrists show. ???)

We had five women for the women's event, and all fenced each other -
this was great practice for Nationals, much mroe so than a mixed
tournament where I might end up fencing maybe 1 or 2 women if I'm
lucky. Women's sabre is different in tempo and tactics than men's
sabre, so it was great to have an opportunity to focus on my game for
*women's* sabre rather than dealing with beating both men and women.
And, of course, everyone was very nice and we had a great time -
everyone fencing hard and doing her best but also enjoying it in a
laid back atmosphere.

For the mixed open we had nine fencers - all us women stayed, and four
men joined us. We had one big pool of nine, hurray! (plus DEs,
everyone up) I really appreciated that - it made a small tournament
into a very good training opportunity simply because I got a lot of
bouts. Again, everyone very pleasant and having a good time, while
fencing hard as well.

It was a long drive for me (from Baltimore to Philly) but well worth
it - the idea of two events in one day, one women's and one mixed,
really made it worth the trip, and I had a great time and found it to
be a very good training experience. Recommended for other fencers in
the area to keep an eye out for on the schedule, for future dates.
