    Local Club

Does anyone know of a good place to contact if I want to find a club in my
    area where I can fence?

    How parochial.

    It might have been http://www.britishfencing.com/

Moriarty - contact your local fencing association - it will doubtless
have a list of clubs. You have access to the Internet - try searching
    for it.

How parochial of YOU! Under the Divisions link on the web site we have a map of
the country so that you can start close to home. YOUR web site only has a list
of clubs and, unless you know all the places, you also need a map. Of course
this is the same country that doesn't have to put the name of their country on
their stamps. I suppose when you have such a small country that you can throw a
rock and hit anyone you want to, that would work.

Unfortunately, we do have vast areas in this country where your closest "local"
fencing organization is hundred of miles away.

    Um. No.

My point was not about the lack of maps, the relative size of
countries or the design of postage stamps.

It is about the persistent egocentrism that Americans display. You are
not the only country on Earth.

Shhhhh, don't break that bit of knowledge to them ;-).

In all seriousness, the British Fencing Website also lists clubs (see
"Club Lists") via area. It doesn't have a whizzy map, but most know
whether they want to look in "London", "South East" etc.etc.

    Zak,

I could recommend several directories of clubs, but, since you haven't even
said what country you live in, you are not helping anyone help you!

If you live in the US, and you go to USFencing.org/clubs and you can click
    around the map:
HOWEVER, as one should expect, this will only yield clubs who have paid clubs
dues to the USFA as a member club (at least once, perhaps) since, let's say,
    1995, '96, or so.

There are probably that many clubs, or more, that are NOT going to be listed
    there.

I would recommend pulling up google.com, and doing a websearch and "fencing"
and the name of your city, or your state, province, or whatever gets a
manageable number of results: you will probable come across some directory
    listings, as well.

    Good luck!

Actually, not all Americans display egocentrism (although I suspect the term
you were actually looking for was ethnocentrism, or perhaps my own creation
"americocentrism". Strangely enough, the words "anglocentrism" and
"eurocentrism" don't have to be made up as they already exist. ;~) ).

In fact that's a common prejudice which ranks with the "uptight, pasty folks
with bad teeth" stereotype for the Brits.

BTW, nearly every major political crisis in the last half century has sprung
from the seeds planted by British and European Imperialism, so don't get all
    righteous on us now.

Yeah, but that's because, unlike England, we don't have any other
countires in close proximity to ours, and it would be prohibitively
expensive to build a tunnel to our nearest neighbor like you guys did.

So Canada and Mexico aren't close neigbours of the USA? (leaving
aside the fact that Wales and Scotland are very close neighbours of
England. Perhaps you were talking about the United Kingdom?)

It's interesting the way the first openly implicates the US too, isn't
it? With regard to the second, I think Straw's navel-gazing apologies
were nothing but spin, to which anyone remotely familiar with the
    Labour Party may attest.

I, for one, was airing my own opinion about Americans, which is
obviously quite valid as you got quite upset by it. Moreover, you were
seeking, egocentrically, to gainsay, to answer perhaps for your entire
mixed-up culture and to attribute some misplaced blame to mine for
something that occurred way before my own lifetime. Your capacity for
reasoned argument is seriously flawed and I bet you're a foilist to
    boot...

Hum, interesting. Can't see much evidence of "European" imperialism in
that lot, only two rather biased characters having a swipe at the
British. I'm sure the rest of Europe (however many individual countries
and ruling powers that is) won't thank you for that...
