I wish to report that I was the highest finisher in the Div I WS for my age group . . . which is the over-50 age group. Not to mention that I was the OLDEST fencer there (though not the only veteran, there were a couple of other baby vets).

Those girls are a tad too fast for my reaction times these days! Saw some great fencing, though.

Thank you so much! I need that right now.

I'm fencing better than I ever was. Unfortunately, everybody else has improved even more!!!!

peach, congratulations on your result. [btw - i e-mailed you about 6 months ago, I relocated and found a good fencing salle again, thank's for the invitation, i'm now orbiting around alittle]

Tell us more about your result; how many in the pools, what can you tell us specifically about your bouts?

Since I've been having bad shoulder problems for the last few weeks (legacy of being a softball catcher), I was mainly working on correct form and on not causing myself pain. In that regard, it was a highly successful tournament. After I got over sulking about not making the cut, I suddenly realized that nothing hurt, and did a little dance.

I had several people I used to be able to beat in my pool -- it wasn't as strong a pool as some other people had, actually. Wendy Saschenbrecker from Canada, who dropped her weapon half way through our bout and started complaining, making me laugh so hard I ended up losing the touch, and who flunged at me once but missed, which also made me laugh. She finished 31st. Claire Deming. originally from Florida who has been training at Lilov and was fencing better than she ever did before but lost too many bouts 4-5 and didn't make the cut, Valerie Providenza, who I don't think I've ever beaten, who only finished 23rd (she's very strong), Carolyn Wright from Virginia, who finished 15th and is very smooth but can be hit (though I didn't, much, this time) when she's retreating because she just sort of takes swipes instead of using footwork to make a stop-hit, but who has a very smooth attack, and Anna Jacobson who, though she trains at Nellya, was definitely not another sister--she was the only one I beat, mostly on tempo attacks, and she finished 46th. Maybe a cousin? I had Vitali Nazylmov for my first referee and Kristov for the second halfway through the pool, so good refereeing, which was good because I was working on something Vitali had suggested to me and I wanted to see if he would see it (how's that for complicated) (he did, though it didn't do enough to compensate for my lack of reaction time).

I watched the pools and the DEs as well, with much interest. Alexis Jemal worked her way up the back of repechage, I believe, and ended up facing Sada Jacobson in a really good bout. It was actually very close, which was a real improvement for Alexis (who won the NCAAs this year as a senior). Alexis has an attack which looks to her opponents like massive preparation but is very clear to the referee, and she managed to sucker even Sada with it, but Sada adjusted and managed to pull off several very nice attacks in preparation once she timed her footwork, toward the end of the bout. Arkady Burdan and Yuri Gelman were both behind the curtains during the Jemal-Jacobson bout (well, Arkady was only sort of) because George K. did another one of his repeated announcements (I guess about 10 repetitions) to get the spectators off the strip before the bout. At one point Yuri thought the referee had lost track of the score and started to challenge him, but when Sada told him the referee was right Yuri accepted *her* word for it, which was funny when you think about it.

Chris Becker lost to Mariel Zagunis in her semi-final. Always tough when it's someone you know so well. Chris has such clean, clear style. Some of the other women's sabre fencers don't think much of it but they don't realize that what looks so simple is merely absolutely correct. Chris never over-lunges, and her stop-cuts to the hand are long and elegant, rather than the jerky whips that many others use. Of course, I've also seen Chris get beaten by people she should just trounce because she loses her focus, but she's the kind of person repechage is made for! Chris is still one of the best WS fencers in the country even though she's in her late 30s.

The final bout between Sada and Mariel was fantastic. Sada lost the first four touches on one-lighters where she was attacking--Mariel, I think (I was at the end of the strip) was counter-attacking beautifully. Sada seemed as if she were almost asleep. (I was thinking that she must be a little burnt out after her victory at Junior Worlds). Mariel got a huge advantage. Then suddenly after the break Sada pulled off a run of touches that was something like 10-1 and won by only a couple of points. It was really remarkable. I believe Sada is taking a year and a half off from Yale to train, and I think it's a good idea though it'll be hard for her to return when her friends have graduated--she has the ability and the intelligence to do very well indeed, if she concentrates on that.

Tournament was fun (except for the losing part!), and well-run from what I could figure. Lots of vendors came, so I got to do window shopping (woohoo!).

BugabooX is a jewel in the roughBugabooX is a jewel in the roughBugabooX is a jewel in the rough
So even though I didn't perform up to my potential -- ah, heck, I didn't perform up to an amoeba's potential -- I had an otherwise wonderful trip with my wife. And at least one odd story to share:

This fencer in our pool (no names necessary) isn't particularly pleased with the outcome of his second bout. Maybe he figures he's better than the guy who beat him; maybe he doesn't like the ref. Whatever. This guy ignores standard procedure to shake hands after the bout, and instead slaps the other guy's open palm about as hard as he can, spins around and storms off.

The victim, who isn't really hurt but is stunned nonetheless, complains to the ref that the antagonist hit him in a most unfriendly manner. The director didn't see the action, though, so he tells him there's nothing to do about it.

Another bout passes. At the end of it, Mr. Angry stalks across the floor to the guy he slapped at earlier, passing directly behind the director. I figure, hmm, he's gonna apologize for his bad behavior. Nuh-uh. Instead, he loudly declares to his handshake victim, "Don't f--- with me, man."

Yeah, he's standing about five feet away from the ref.

And like a good referee, he calmly calls the offensive fencer by name to get his attention, and then shows a pretty black card pulled from his shirt pocket. That's the end of that.

Stoopid. I've never seen someone so calmly get himself booted from an event before.

Peach that was a wonderfully written excerpt of your time spent at the competition. I am really really impressed. I particularily enjoyed reading about the style of the fencers. The long lunge with the swipe to the hand, that sounds much more focused than does the slapping and hoping it gets there technique. Thanks again for the write up. I did a little fencing this evening and felt more focused. I am really trying to develop more concentration and I feel that it's getting there.

Hope to see everyone at nationals, if we all go, and as for SARS...a pox on it, all for one, and one for all.
