Yeah, I thought it was a black card at first, but he kept fencing, after going out for a cigarette. I watched him fence in the round of 16 and he cramped up and had to withdraw.

Red then. Oh well. Still pretty darn stupid and unprofessional of him.

Anyone here see the black card given to one of the coaches? Evidently the bout committee actually applauded when he was told to leave the venue. The guy was screaming at an under-12, and then turned on the ref. "Who the f--- do you think you are?"

Duh. The guy who can black-card you, dude.

Sounds like it was fun NAC! I feel sorry I missed it, lots of action on and outside the strips ;-)
    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Yeah, he's standing about five feet away from the ref.

And like a good referee, he calmly calls the offensive fencer by name to get his attention, and then shows a pretty black card pulled from his shirt pocket. That's the end of that.

Stoopid. I've never seen someone so calmly get himself booted from an event before.
The fencer in question actually got a Group III red card as a spectator. He skulked away since he was just plain grumpy but the referee gave him a red card. The innocent victim (yours truly) thought it was a black card because he saw the back of a red card. Many refs have their cards tied together and you only see the next card down from behind. This ref, being a good ref, had different cards in different pockets so the red was the only card in his hand. From a discussion with the referee after the pool, a black card was an option but the ref didn't feel like it merited it. I did but I also didn't want to lose my indicators after having beaten someone who is better than I am.

It did make the whole pool much more interesting. Epee needs some drama since it's much harder to argue touches with the ref.

    Reffing

All in all this meet had some of the best reffing in saber ever seen at an NAC!!!
It was great. Even the Y10 and Y12 Events were directed by experienced directors.
    What a refreshing change!

what good is giving a red card to a fencer while he's not fencing?
is it carried with him to his next bout? otherwise what's the point?

Ahh... but that's the difference... the Ref didn't give the red card to a fencer... he gave it to a spectator (you are only a fencer during the bout)... It is a group 3 warning to the spectator, basically telling him not to be an idiot again, or he would leave the building... As a spectator, you get one warning (if done correctly) then you get tossed, even if you act like a fool in front of another director.
