What happened to Hadzic? Injury? He would be in my top 4 for Men's Epee.
My top 12 for men's foil:
1. Alex Massialas
2. Gerek Meinhart
3. Miles Chamley Watson
4. Michele Caporizzi
5. David Willete
6. Michael Dudey
7. Turner Caldwell
8. Brian Kaneshige
9. Zain Shaito
10. Ariel Desmet
11. Eli Shenkel
12. Adam Elkassas
Incidentally, this is the nastiest men's foil field in...ever.
I wonder what the record is for "number of Olympians in a collegiate competition"?
Ouch. I'm interested in this, could you elaborate by chance if you have enough information? I heard the fencer's school gets a hefty fine if he/she is black carded at an NCAA event. My source, a member of an NCAA fencing team, said it is a $10,000 fine. However, I am not sure where he got this number from, so I could be completely wrong. If this is true, I wonder what other consequences would be taken. Would he be kicked off of his team? It would be a shame because he is a good fencer and the captain of the them.
I heard there was no physical contact or profanity. To me a black for any other type of "criticism" in this type of environment is too much. The ref who issued the card, and whom I have never seen give a black before , frequents the forum. Hope we can get his point of view.
As far as predictions, I will try to be semi-serious, and come up with one a day.
Personally I fenced at Notre Dame, my Daughter is now at Barnard, and I ref on the West Coast (and would like for it to stay alive).
So - a lot of allegiances, but for next 4 years I'm rooting for Columbia - thus to avoid any bias I won't put in any of their fencers.
In general it's an odd event - you have to be exceedingly dominant in 23 5touch/3 minute bouts to make Top 4, then you've to win only 2 15touch bouts, which will be single staged, to become a Champ. So regular season record should be a good indicator of the place near the top, while overall latest results should help in picking the Final 4.
To me the hardest Women's Weapon to pick is Epee. For variety of reasons some strong fencers are missing but majourity of favourites are here.
Top 7 would be :
Guzzi-Vincenti PSU (37-5)
Holmes Princeton (17-1)
Nelip ND (48-6)
Hurley ND (39-5)
Kong Stanford (37-6)
Bassa Stanford (36-7)
Dabrowa OSU (46-11)
all 7 have strong, experienced Epee Coaches who will bring the Athletes to the peak form for the Nationals; and support staff/facilities to take care of any "interim issues".
next in line :
Fath (SJU)
Ferdman (SJU)
Piasecka (OSU)
Vaggo (Harvard)
Van Loon (Harvard)
D'Agostino (Duke)
Scanlan (Princeton)
Bhinder (Penn)
I was extremely impressed with Kong last weekend, seeing her fence for the 2nd time, even knowing that she made Top 16 in Senior World Cups twice last year.
So... after much pondering :
1. Hurley (ND)
2. Holmes (Princeton)
3. Dabrowa (OSU)
3. Kong (Stanford)
