| One of my friends has just bought a new pair of Adidas shoes, he's happy with them. They seem much stronger and better made than his previous Frances-Lames pair that died in a year, during which he didn't fence much at all!
But so far, my Dunlop Volleys (AUD$25 or aboud US$16) are doing well - they're light, the grip is decent if not fantastic and I have more money for other things .

| I never new that they made special shoes for volleyball! Is there a link that you could post so I could take a look at them? I will try almost anything for 16 bones!
Thanks!

| Re: Re: Best Fencing Shoes? Quote: Originally posted by sparkie After many years (25) and many competitions, I have to say that the best shoes ARE NOT fencing shoes. Fencing shoes (adidas) are too expensive and too poorly cushioned.
I recommend Asics volleyball shoes. They have more forefoot and heel cushioning, they have a rounded heel, they don't wear out as fast and they are less expensive. | While the former fencing shoes from some time ago were pretty bad, I think that if you haven't tried some of the newer models you should. There has been a lot of improvement in the past years in terms of cushioning, especially with the Adidas.
But I do see a lot of people using the Asics as you mentionned. I plan to give them a try when my current fencing shoes are worn out. If they are cheaper and work well, then I will probably use them.
As for the debate that fencing shoes give longer lunges and greater speed, I don't know. I tend to think that this comes more from the fencer than from the shoes. However, the one advantage I have found to fencing shoes is that they are more comfortable for fencing, I have less blisters, and therefore can fence better in the later rounds of a tournament with them than with other non specific shoes.

See the attached pic, those are the same colour as mine too .
Here's the manufacturer's site: http://www.dunlopsport.com.au/content/06_01_b.html
It seems they were made for tennis!

| They look a bit like low top versions of the Chucks that they have here in the states. They are the original basketball shoe and names after Chuck Taylor I believe, who was an early basketball great. I think I will grab a less brightly colored pair and try them out! Thanks Kini Mini!

Anyway, if I were bothered about appearances I'd never wear breeches . Quote: Originally posted by cvillefencer They look a bit like low top versions of the Chucks that they have here in the states. Thanks Kini Mini! | Glad to be able to help . I'm wearing the plain white pair, with abit of blue above the heel, it goes with my gear - Uhlmann's little blue patches LOL!

| Re: Re: Best Fencing Shoes? Quote: Originally posted by sparkie Remember, most NACs are on concrete floors and, Peter Harmers article (which I disagree with) aside, my practical experience and aching knees tell the tale: concrete with carpet on it just ain't a good surface to fence on. | I think the importance of this post was overlooked. The surface where you're using the fencing shoes is very important. At home, I do footwork on a hardwood floor (laid over concrete). At my club, we fence "on concrete". I have used five types of shoes in that setting, and these are my observations (keep in mind that I have had 2 knee surgeries on my trailing knee-left and my ankle on that side was sprained twice in past three months):
Nike-Air
Adidas-crosstraining
Adidas-Akrids low high-top (wrestling)
BG victory fencing shoe
Adidas-asymetric fencing shoe
Concrete floor
Best cushion:
1. Adidas crosstraining
2. Nike air
Best lateral support:
1. Adidas asymetrics
2. Adidas crosstraining
Hardwood floor
Best cushion:
did not feel major difference between asymetrics, crosstraining or nike-air (crosstraining felt almost too cushioned).
Best lateral support:
1.Asymetrics
2. Akrids
Worse shoes:
1. Victory shoe
2. Akrids |

| Adida's Equipment is what I wear right now. They look great, and costs 110 a pair, and that's that. There is nothing really speical about them. My $39.95 running shoes feels 10 times better then Equipment. |

By my calculation, with shipping (to Virginia going standard parcel), comes out to $112.96 US.
The problem in my experience with the Leon Paul equipment is the very heavy tax and business expense of running a shop in the UK means that they will always be more expensive than just about anywhere else for the same thing.
LP gear is good stuff, but not better than Uhlmann for example, you just pay a bit more. Of course I have heard wonders about the flickmaster blade they offer as well as the Golubitsky Pro foils. I am sure I will break down and buy one eventually just to see what all the noise is about.
With the exchange rate being what it is you can go to www.thefencingpost.com and get almost Euro prices after you take off their web discount. They are about the best deals in the states that I have found. Currently they are offering the D'art's for $99.00. The differance is it will be coming from the US instead of a slow boat from the land of boiled food! :-) For good international money conversion check out www.xe.com
Good luck,
Cville

I know people that would say you got a deal actually! You could have maybe saved about 15-20 dollars max, but it would have been more work. Where did you order from and how do you like the D'arts?
