Make wires? Ummm, never. It's just too darned hard to wrap it in string twice by hand. Surprisingly though, the rule book says nothing about it having to be wrapped in string. In fact, it says nothing about the guage or the resistance! It merely implies that it must be less than 500 micrometers.
The moral of the story: buy your wires and take the safe bet.
That will work. I use it all the time. It's a fairly simple process. Soldering gun/iron, hemostats and a clamp/vise. Push the metal button out of the plastic cup, grasp it with the hemostats and mount it in the vise. Strip off about 1/4" of insulation, heat the button until the solder melts or you can push the broken piece of wire out with the new wire. Voila! Have been doing this for years and haven't had any problems. There are several variations on this. Maybe someone will chime in. Good luck.
