Thursday, April 3, 2003 -- "It's considered a bit of an unusual sport."
Michael Eskin says this - incredibly - with a straight face.
In the background, pairs of his fellow students at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst are lunging, noisily, around a large practice room at Totman Gym. They are dressed entirely in white, with barely a hint of skin showing. A few sport silver tops that make them look like baked potatoes wrapped in foil, as one of them will later joke. They are wearing slightly creepy-looking wire-mesh masks that obscure their faces. And they are wielding weapons - 35-inch swords.
The sport, of course, is fencing.
