Sabre compatability w/boxes

Old Sabres, old sabre boxes. Is making an older electric sabre (with socket) functional simply a matter of shorting the sensor socket?

and

How can modern sabres (sans socket) be used on older sabre boxes?

You can get rid of the sensor socket entirely (cut the wire), and then short the body cord socket (for 2 prong, just remove the plastic washer from the B-pin terminal, for LP bayonet connect a bare wire to the screw terminal and then wrap it securely around the metal bracket). Essentially, the entire sabre becomes a single node across the C and B terminals of the body cord.

Older sabre boxes need a firmware upgrade (i.e., a new chip that
plugs in to replace the original chip). You can expect to pay at least $100 for the new chip from Allstar or Uhlmann (I don't know what Leon Paul charges). If the box is from a manufacturer no longer in business (e.g., the Sabre Technologies boxes), you're out of luck.

Now this suggestion is not for competition, but it will allow you to practice with the old boxes. Connect only the A and C lines to the box. You will have a continuous white light and it will not stop whipovers, but you will get a light when you hit the lame.

Dave gave you the difinitive answer to changing old sabres. They now make Sabre only guards replacing the plastic washer with a metal washer.
