| Cadet Age Group If I were born on 2nd April 1987, I still have the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 seasons as a cadet, right?
They say that to be 'Under 17' you must be 17 or younger at the start of the year of the World Championships:
2003 - I was 15 at the start of the year.
2004 - I will be 16 at the start of the year.
2005 - I will be 17 at the start of the year, and turn 18 in April.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks. |

| The month and day are not important in calculating the age for eligibility. It is the year you were born that is being considered. For the 2002-2003 season you must not have been born any earlier than 1986. Next season 2003-2004, you must not have been born any earlier than 1987. For the 2004-2005 season you must not have been born any earler than 1988. So next season is your last season as a cadet.

Thanks. | More bad news, this Summer Nationals will be your last one.
The Junior World Championships just ended the season for those born in 1986. Usually the last cadet meet you will be eligible for is the the Junior Olympic Meet. That is unless you make the National Cadet or Junior Team (both of which you are eligible.)
So work on that!!

| This year, at Junior World Championships, fencers born in 1983 and after could compete, so for Cadet WC'ships those born in 1985 and after could do it.
About you, born in 1987, you should compete in Cadet WC'ships until 2005, and Junior WC'ships until 2008

I agree with you about Junior (under 20) fencers born in 1983 and after could compete. There is 3 years between that and Cadet (under 17) which would make it 1986 could have competed this year. In fact Emily Cross who won the Gold was born in October 1986 and this was her last year as a Cadet.

I mistook with the number of years between beginning of Junior age group and Cadet age group.
In Cadet WC'ships, this year, only those born in 1986 and after (and not 1985 and after as I said) could compete.
So everyone born in 1987 should compete in Cadet WC'ships in 2004, and in Junior WC'ships until 2007.
