Wasn't he a painter of some sort? ;-)
    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Yep, I learned about him last night, however, I imagine that this was the name of their former coach. I almost went to this tournament last year, but I had a back injury and was out of fencing for the month before. Rather than go and get totally and mercilessly creamed, I opted to go fence a local foil tournament in Houston.
... without remorse for the past, confident in the present, and full of hope for the future, [d'artagnan] went to bed and slept the sleep of the brave.

    Who Was De Gall?

He (Imre de Gall) was my father. He was born in 1911 in what was then Hungary (now Serbia). His father was the Hungarian National Champion (Sabre) in 1900. My father was a member of the Hungarian national team in the 1930's, participating in many European tournaments. After WWII, he came to Canada, where he taught fencing at the Wolsley Barracks (Royal Canadian Military - London, Ontario) as well as established a private club. During those years (1950's) he coached a Canadian national champion (Sabre) who went on to the Pan Am Games and the Olympics. He left Canada in 1958, eventually settling in Dallas, TX. He coached fencing at the Cistercian Prepatory School in Irving, TX for many years. He also began the fencing program at Southern Methodist University, where he was their coach for 25+ years. He also established the Mustang Fencer's Club, at one time the most dominant AFLA club in the Southwest. The Mustang Open, which he sponsored, was one of the most prestigious tournaments in the area for many years. Fencing was his love and he was largely responsible for developing the sport in the Southwest. He died in 1994. This tournament carries his name in recognition of his efforts around the sport of fencing.

I wish you had given us a little more warning that this. I can barely arrange my schedule to attend an event four months ago, much less just two months ago. My time machine just isn't that powerful.
