#1 | | Guest | New England Division's Spring Schedule The Spring Schedule for the NEUSFA is no online at http://www.neusfa.org
Note that the Y10 & Y12 Division Championships are open to all
divisions because they are not Qualifying events (the Y14 is a
qualifing event, and thereby restricted to New England Division
Members only)
Pre registration is encouraged for all qualifying events, entries
received after the deadline but before the tournament are assessed a
double fee, Walkins pay triple.
Any rated referees that wish to officiate at our qualifiers please
contact me(adam@prisedefer.com). Refs with a 5 rating or higher are
paid $100/day.
We are still looking for a location for Pomme de Terre as Brandeis has
a conflict this year... the date will be JUNE 21-22... more info to
follow.

You guys pay referees $100/day?!?!?!?! Wow! around here (North Texas
Division), the Division officers have trouble with even paying the USFA
standard $40/day for Division qualifying events!

Actually, this raises a good question. What are the standards for referees
in various parts of the country? And, while you're at it, what is the
general rate of the entry fees?
Cheers,

New England Events are usually $10 and then $5 for additional events the same
day, for all ages.
We do have some special tournaments, such as our Pomme de Terre in June with
higher fees.

Interesting but I've been finding that you have to go to the section
level before you can count on having official directors as opposed to
self directed. Of course epee is much more amenable to self direction
than foil or sabre where you really need a truly trained director.

Again an interesting issue.
For entry fees you can get an estimate by looking at the
entry forms for national events ($30 for the tournament and $30 for
each event you enter). Sectional (PCS for me) ranging from $30 per
tournament and $30 for each event to $25 and $20 event). And then the
local events (BayCup) seem to range in the $15-$20 range per event and
$20 ?? for the entire series. But the local events tend to be almost
entirely self directed (definitely true for epee and while not sure
I believe most likely for foil and sabre also) which is not the
case at the sectional and national level events I've attended.
At the BayCup I have heard occasional complaint that some use the
tournaments as a cash cow i.e. that the clubs cut costs by not providing
or paying for directors. Not sure whether such complaints are valid.

Wait a sec.... With those entry fees, how in the blazes do you afford to pay
$100/day to referees? Even if you're getting your venue for completely for
free, and have the awards donated, and virtually NO other associated costs,
how do you even come close to breaking even? Mind you, I have some rather
extensive experience with tournament organization on the Divisional/
Sectional level, and those numbers just seem ... too good to be true.
Cheers,
David Sierra
