I would say that the fencer is Tim Morehouse, one of the nicest fencers, and
persons, that I know.

On a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 represents the worst behaved fencers I have
seen, I would give Tim no worse than 2. And he was certainly having a good day,
losing to Ivan Lee in the Gold Medal match, which I believe was his highest NAC
finish ever.

Notice that he has turned completely to the side, not at all directing his
exuberance towards his opponent.

It is the people who expostulate towards their opponents that get me. And at
times a verbal warning if I am refereeing. There could be such outrageous
behavior directed at an opponent that I would give a red card immediately,
without warning. And I certainly have seen behavior that deserved a verbal
warning or worse from the referee.

Oh, come now, he's obviously god's gift to fencing and the world, so
can we deny him his little pets?

I think the point Mr Marshall is making here is that there are people who
take the sport too seriously. My opinion is that as soon as you start
taking a sport too seriously then you've really lost the plot.
Ultimately, we're hitting each other with bendy bits of metal which to be
honest, is a bit on the silly side. You can say this about any sport,
they're all silly in their own way.

I have to be honest, I haven't fenced for eight months or more due to
pressures of work etc, but I've found plenty of time to indulge in
mountain biking, which I also consider to be silly. I see people who
have All The Gear And No Idea who have spent twice what I have on a bike,
but don't appear to have as much fun as I do when I go out.

I'm not saying that you should't compete in competitive sports, but you've
got to draw the line somewhere.

Well, it's been my experience that the fencers who indulge in these
sort of tantrums when "robbed" of a touch and/or do emphatic victory
celebrations when they get the touch are the prima donnas of the
fencing world. A bit too caught up in themselves and with egos the
size of the Hindenburg. And all over a touch or two, which unless you
are at the top of the world elite means rather little in the scheme of
things, and inasmuch as directing errors tend to even out in the long
run are not worth embarassing yourself over the way the fellow
depicted is doing.

Unless, as I sarcastically said, one thinks oneself god's gift to
fencing and therefore entitled to petulant outbursts over relative
trifles.

There, now aren't you sorry you asked? ( Most people who have to read
through my irascible screeds are. )
