Junior World's 2003: Men's Team Saber; Women's Team Foil

Sunday, April 13, 2003
For Immediate Release

Silver and Bronze

On the final day of competition at the Junior & Cadet World Championships,
U.S. teams won silver and bronze, to take the total U.S. medal count for the
entire competition to five.

The U.S. men's sabre team of Adam Crompton (18, Irvington, N.J.), Patrick
Ghattas (18, Beaverton, Ore.), Mike Momtselidze (19, Columbus, Ohio), and
Jason Rogers (19, Los Angeles, Calif.), sliced through all competition until
the final match. After a bye into the round of 16, they defeated Germany
45-39, Russia 45-44, and Poland 45-41 before meeting the team from South
Korea in the final.

The final was breathtaking, with several changes of lead throughout. But in
the end, the Korean team won by the score of 45:38, and the U.S. finished
with a silver medal.

The U.S. women's foil team of Emily Cross (16, New York, N.Y.), Jacqueline
Leahy (18, Hanna Thompson (19, Rochester, N.Y.), and Metta Thompson (19,
Rochester, N.Y.) went into team women's foil competition seeded fifth.

They, too, had a bye into the round of 16, and like the men's sabre team,
started off with impressive victories, defeating Holland 45-21 and then
China 45-33. In the round of eight, they met the Italian team and lost a
heartbreaking match 45-44.

The team bounced back in the match for the bronze medal, defeating
third-seeded Poland 45-43.

In men's epee competition, the U.S. team of Benjamin Bratton (17, Richmond
Hill, N.Y.), Tim French (19, Austin, Texas), Benjamin Solomon (19, Chagrin
Falls, Ohio) and William Verigan (18, Wyckoff, N.J.) was seeded seventh
going in to the competition.

In the round of 32, they defeated Japan 45-34. Next came Greece, and another
victory, this time 45-44. Finally, in their attempt to reach the semifinals,
they U.S. team was defeated by the eventual gold medallists, France, 45-33.
