Biscuits ehhh? Well, not being at all familier with the American KFC menu, I have to ask.... could these biscuits, perchance, be anything like the biscuits in Popeye's? (I ate there when I was in DC). In which case, could somebody PLEASE tell me why on earth they're called biscuits, when they're quite plainly scones?!

Anyway... that's my pet peeve off my chest

Scones: yum yum, they are made with extra shortening or butter. They have sugar. They have blueberries if you want!! I make some at Christmas with dried cranberries that are guaranteed to add inches to anyone's waistline.
Biscuits have shortening but are not sweet. They are fattening too but not as fattening as scones. What they serve at Popeye's are not scones but biscuits because of the lack of sweetness in them.
See the difference??

My friend from England calls cookies "biscuits" and they are neither scones nor biscuits.

Ok, I think I worked out the cultural divide...
American - Rest of the World

Cookies - Biscuts
Scones - English Muffins
Biscuts - Scones

But then again I could be totallyu and utterly off track!

minimum wage, the program that hawaii managed to wreck in about two years was originally designed to bring about 8,000 people out of dead-end minimum wage jobs and into good paying careers. but, bah, who wants the competition?

for Peter: I am totally astounded! Maybe she had a learning disability? It's common for people to assume that asian people are more intelligent than others and we can't realize it if they act like caucasians. Then we also expect asian people to speak softly, behave more courteously, the women are supposed to be servile and obedient and the men are all scientists. My first trip to Japan had the following, I went for a walk somewhere in Tokyo, don't ask me where, I have no idea, I just went for a stroll, I looked at a sort of concrete park area and saw three or four homeless men sleeping on the ground. I was totally taken off-guard. I never expected to see homeless men in Japan.

p.s. What's with all the misspellings? are we on a misspelling jag?

Jupiter, perhaps "we're" also on a "forgetting to capitalize the first word in a sentence" jag too...

Yes, some undeducated, or ignorant adults esp in the PRC are like that. Just like kids and animals. Not civilise.

My wife is blonde and Danish. You should see the gawk we get in Chinatwon here. Usu. it is the men who gawk, open-mouthed. The wife would smile.

the less educated Chinese people here, trying to be polite still refer to the white people as 'foreigners' - oy-gok-yun. The more educated one would say 'westerners' - sei-yun.

Be nice, OK?

Ciao.

The least I would have covered her table in free coke and biscuits, just to annoy her. Maybe you could empty the cash register, throw all the money on her table, then call 911 and tell the cops she threatened you and held up the joint. (She goes to jail, you're a hero.)

If she caught me on a bad day I'd have just knocked her out. Sure you might have to pay a $500 fine for misdemeanor assault, but I've always said 'some things are worth the price'.

Most likely, KFC and this old lady deserve each other. As a former food worker (flipped hamburgers for 3+ years) I sympathize and I'm sorry you're caught between the corporate evil and public stupidity...

I know, I know. I can be dreadfully idealistic at times (and other times I can be dreadfully cynical, it's an interesting paradox). I want to be a teacher, for Pete's sake, so I'm clearly not-to-sane

I've done some volunteer work, and I felt good knowning I was helping people- but that's an naive notion (and I was young). More recently I've done forced-voluntee work (an oxymoron surely?) but I've still tried by best even though I knew I was getting nothing for something I didn't want to do. I guess it's a way I feel somewhat dignified, always giving things my best shot, whether they're what I want to do or not.

*shrug*

I don't know. I'm just a very odd person (in case nobody had noticed that since I started posting in February )

Ahhh, but the little round things atop a Cobbler's Pie are also called scones, but they are not sweet. So therefore, all Popeye's biscuits are scones, but not all scones are Popeye's biscuits.

Aoife,

Ignore the critics. Always do your best, no matter what. It might not seem like it at the time, but you WILL get back what you put into any given job you do. It can also serve as a building block for bigger things.

I may seem "idealistic" too, but you know where that's gotten me? My childhood dreams (of being published, among other things) have been fulfilled. How many people can say their dreams have come true?

If you like look on the bright side, you keep doing it girlfriend! Some people only see the dark side, & that's their loss. I think you're doing just fine the way you are.

Just watch out for little old ladies who want bigger biscuits!

Jupiter,

You're funny:
"...we can't realize it if they act like caucasians."

Don't mean to disagree with you again!

There ARE Asian people who do speak softly. Those who do not are usu. the ones who are less educated and in some cases, even if their well-educated, they are simply ignorant...or nouveau riches.

Talking loudly is a trait also associated with the stereotypical 'ugly Americans' the rest of the world know so well about.

Asia is, for better or for worse, becoming the same as the rest of the world. What you observed in Japan is a result of the economic downturn. Jobs are no longer a lifetime thing. Hence the homeless men in Japan.

Youths and women are dissatisfied with their traditional roles. They've seen what their counterparts in western societies are like, are treated, they want the same things.

This is one of the by-products of globalisation.

I don't knwo about where you live, Jupiter, but here in Vancover, we have many ESL = English as a Second Language students from overseas... Just like the proverbial genie, once the young people have been exposed to life here in N. America, it is VERY difficult to expect them to live the 'traditional' Confucian life.

In China, esp. in the countryside, as a result of 'tradition' and the 'one child' policy - which has since been relaxed - girls are considered a waste of money. You spend the money to raise a wife for her future husband's family... they are considered to be 'money losing' business.

Since they are not appreciated in the countryside, girls go to the coastal regions to get work inthe factories..

Guess what happens.

They make in one month more money than the family makes in a year down on the farm.

So the tide has turned...but they are still considered as 'money losing business'. Boys are still referred over girls.
