A giant hardware/auto chain accross Canada which pays the provinces minimum wage rate.
If you pay minimum, why work the maximum and put up with all the hassle? No reward, nobody notices the extra effort, and because it's a giant chain, noone cares......

I don't know why but they are referred to as biscuits. In America, we think of scones as a dessert item (or more of a snooty dessert item) you would have with tea, and not with a meal. A biscuit would be eaten at a meal and not be considered a dessert you would have with tea, for the most part.
If you have any other questions about biscuits and America, I will flog you with a herring until you understand the fact that Americans are right, Canadians are wrong. |

| I don't think the attitude about not working your best on minimum pay is a great one. Why not put your all into it- even if you don't get loads of money. Isn't the knowledge that you did your best a good feeling?

| I agree, Edew. You can be my right-hand man. I'll even let you dispose of her with a foil/sabre/epee, whichever one you prefer.

| Catlady has the idea, it's those middle aged men! with the bathtub: too bad you didn't offer a little scrub brush just in case it wasn't clean enough [get it? he sees dirt where there aint none]
usually i just absorb the entire tirade, it makes you stronger.
I fall into the category of the one who can't believe the computer is really broken, and my immediate impulse is to jump over the counter and fix it.
curious george, howdy! you remind me a little of the person with whom i fenced, who used to wear a Curious George T-shirt in class. So for Rayen, no one is diminishing what you said, and I was serious about trying to do a few deep breaths, and I'm not kidding around about making contact with a little old lady, try to make these people your friends, your customer is a friend of sorts, and they'll remember you for your kindness and want to return, and believe it or not, when they come back to your store, it's always at the right moment.
addendum: relaxation techniques won't make her not be a pain in the butt, but, will help you to handle her better next time. Thats what I wanted to say.

| I have to say, after working for so long in different "service" industries I have a certain appreciation for those behind the counter...any counter.
But it does come to an end, like when they're on the phone with their boy/girlfriend, etc. at the time & don't even take a moment to say "hi."
That poor old woman must have been confused, causing some of her odd behavior. Her being at KFC wouldn't have made me nervous...it's how she GOT there that would have scared me. I don't like leaving the house during the late morning-early afternoon because that's when so many of the "confused people" (which knows NO age) are out on the roads! Think rush hour is scary? Try the 1st day of any given month! WHEW!

| What was it like before working for so long in different service industries he or she have a certain appreciation for those behind the counter ?No I don't think there are any. And.
It depends on what the meaning of the word "it" is. The time do not even take a moment to say hi is where it's at."That is a very unusual color" poor old woman must have been confused causing some of her odd behavior ?
Makes sense to me.I'm sure she would like to hear about that.Interesting explanation. What do you like?Curious George is always thinking.OK I will try it.What do you do in your spare time? |

| I've spent time doing CS for various 'evil corporate enitities'. BSkyB and Virgin Trains to name two. My time with both was a mixture of high stress, low pay and excellent 'customer interaction'. Whoever coined the phrase "the customer is always right" has never worked for a CS desk. The plus side is that I now have some great stories of the bizarre especially - working for Virgin. |

| I think the "bot" is broken. The only thing that made any sense in its reply to me was "what do you do with your spare time?"
Of course, that answer is easy: I have no spare time. I'm a mom.

| Hi!
Rayen, how is this for nasty:
Scene: bustling chinese street (Shenzhen) middle of summer, about 35 degrees centigrade. I, noticable since I am the only westerner anywhere near, am carrying my then-almost 2 year old son.
My son, as is common among kids his age, likes to smile at people and try to make them smile to him. He is unusual in one easily observable way: he has a cleft deformity. He started to smile to a woman in her 20ies coming down the street, awaiting a smile in return. She, OTOH, did not smile - she started to make angry faces at him and pointing at his cleft so that he almost started crying.
That made me livid. Usually, I suffer fools better than most people, but when they try to mess with my kids it is hardball time. I decided to stoop as low as her, and started to openly gawk at her bust - which she had none. Rough, but sometimes that is the only thing that works. Would do it again in a heartbeat.
Catlady - judging from the size of the post, you sure had a lot to get off your chest!
Have a nice time!
