| Attn slobs: clean your weapons... Hey you.. yes YOU, the one with the rusty, greasy foil.
Mmm hmm.
See my fencing jacket?
Its white. I just washed it.
Here's a rag. Do the world a favor and clean your weapons before you rub skid marks all over half of America.
thanks....

| There's an easy way to keep it white: just don't let me touch it with my dirty weapon. Distance, my friend, distance. |

| I like my sabres rusty--it makes it harder to see the blade. And they leave those lovely red streaks....

| Does anyone know many washings a jacket can endure and still remain serviceable (that is, safe)? |

| Another suggestion might be to purchase the BF weapons which have the anti-rust coating. They do not rust as easily and they are quite sharp looking.

| I never have a problem with rust coming off onto my jacket, but I do get colour coming off of tip tape onto my jacket sometimes.
Still, that's life... fencing isn't really for cleanliness freaks....

| And yet it doesn't require too much effort to wipe your blade and it shows some courtesy.

I rank dirty weapons along the same lines as not saluting before bouts, not shaking hands afterwards, etc. In my humble opinion, clean weapons are a courtesy to your opponent. I may be coming from a different fencing tradition, though.

| there IS a washing limit? Quote: Originally posted by KBayDog Does anyone know many washings a jacket can endure and still remain serviceable (that is, safe)? | I never knew that there WAS a limit to washing it- I guess us clean freaks are most at risk (like me) but is washing it every month and a half the best frequency to have it cleaned? |

| I wash my practice kit once a week (a bit gross I know - I fence 3 or 4 times a week - but it gets "aired" thoroughly in between...). My competition kits gets washed after each use.
Seems reasonables to me, although - realistically - your kit isn't going to stay Persil/Daz/Arial white for long no matter how much you wash it... :-(

Distance, my friend, distance. | No matter how good my distance and parries are, no matter that your point never touches me, I still get these ugly large stripes of rust on my uniform.
Cause no matter how good I get, I still can't stop that late flat hit where you drag your weapon across my arm or leg.
Also, rust weakens a blade. So for my safety, clean your equipment. It's not difficult. |

| I would think that a fencing jacket etc. could be washed many times before it degraded enough to be considered 'unsafe'. One factor might be the use of bleach, which might slowly eat away at the fabric over time in heavy concentrations. Probably most people replace their gear due to its appearance as it gets older.
