Bullets Over Baghdad

Well, the adventure has begun, it seems. Good luck to the men and women of our fighting forces and to the innocent Iraqi civilians caught in the middle....

May it be over quickly, with minimum losses to human life. May our lives go back to something resembling normal quickly and painlessly, may those who fight for whatever side do so with the conviction that what they do is right. May we hopefully get unbiased and uncensored news telling us what has happened. May it all end soon.

In spite of my own personal opinion against this whole misadventure in Iraq - I agree with our PM on the legality of this 'adventure' - my heart and best wishes go out to all the service men and women in ALL the armed forces and all the civilians in the two theatres in that part of the world.

I agree with your above statement. Hope everyone is safe. Soldiers alike.

How bout that Arie Fleischer? I like his style!!! Though I do not agree with his government's present stance, he is amazing when it comes to handling the media! I was watching him a couple of nights ago, and he kept himself on track, to the facts, and avoided questions appropriately. I will admit that a lot of the media were asking him unfair questions, and were fairly biased. However, Arie did not get side tracked, or suckered in. Chalk another point towards biased, and sensationalist media bashing!

Yup, he can sure handle himself...guess that's why he got the job. I would say he has helped tremendously with Bush's image. Could u imagine Bush being up there all the time dealing with that media frenzy?

I'd like to see George Dubya doing a media scrum a la the politicians under the British political system.

Pardon my ignorance, but do the Senator, the Congressmen at both levels of the US government do political scrums? Can't recall seeing any on the news.

i've got to get a telly so i can keep up with this stuff, i have to rely on reading stuff on the internet, i just never got around to it. Questions, now please don't jump back too much, this is just a question, not a guilt trip:

1. how many people feel that media has played a part in setting up the world in fact for WWIII?

2. if a part; how much of a part? 100%, 75%, 40%; 20% or less?

135711,

Nowadays, with your access to the internet, you realy don't need a telly.
You can actually be your own news producer by selecting the sources of news you need.

Reuters provide raw tv footage.
http://www.reuters.com/
so do BBC
http://news.bbc.co.uk/
Deutsche Welle,
http://www.dw-world.de/english
CBC,
http://www.cbc.ca/
ad nauseum.

Oh, don't forget Al-Jazeera
http://english.aljazeera.net/
[this link seems to be down as a result of the hackers.]
too when and if they can conquer the hackers which rumour has it might have something to do with the Pentagon: They can't affrod to let the American people see what the otherside is showing...

civiltech,

According to Alex Strachan, a TV critic/reviewer writing for CanWest he gave CBC the best review in Canada and I have to agree with him.

Now, CTV, is that with Kevin Newman or Lloyd Robertson - he who has too much make-up? Since the switcheroo i can't remember which is which... According to AS, he gave CTV a low rating because they don't have as many reporters on the ground as the other agencies.

That said, I still prefer BBC, CBC and Reuters in that order.

CBC simply because they have reporters like Paul Workman raoming in Iraq by himself and a Globe & Mail reporter. They can even now take credit for taking two Iraqi borhters as PoWs...

CBC?

If you are from over in the central part of Canada, CBC is almost a propoganda machine for the NDP, and socialist liberals. Our PC government has turned our province back into an economic powerhouse with Mike Harris. All the CBC has done is blast him, quote him out of context, and pulicize everything that he hadn't done. There no better with Ernie Eaves! Northern Ontario is the worst! It's a liberal/NDP stronghold, and by god the CBC is gonna keep it that way! I listened to Lorna...interview Stockwell day last year during the FED election, and all she did was chide him on not working on Sunday. Even when Stock wanted to discuss the $1B the Fed's lost on the HRDC scandel, discuss the fed's defecit, and cuts to health. She wouldn't let up on the sunday thing!

Ever watch counterspin on CBC newsworld? For some reason they don't have an equally right of center show. They invite a bunch of social workers on who are excellent speakers, and experts in their field. Then they invite some crack pot gun toting zealot to represent a conservative view....I got pretty tired of seeing the same plot, different people on that show long ago.

I do have to admit....when they discussed war in Iraq on coutnerspin, I was almost pro war at the end of it because of the way they presented it. It was another round of convervative bashing!

Of course, the CBC is a crown corporation. And when you recieve your paycheck from the govt., the last thing you want is a conservative, cost-cutting/red-tape cutting government hacking away wasteful spending in crown corp.'s like the CBC. Obviously the CBC is on the take...And that's the only conspiricy theory I believe in!!!!!

Hmmmm the CBC's budget is $700 000 000 a year. That could feed a lot of starving Iraqi children.

Don't you think?

Civiltech,

I wonder why Ernie is undoing some of the brilliant achievements of Mike Harris?

Why is the SARS haveing such a big impact in Ontario while it has barely made a ripple here in BC? Thankfully, the BC Liberals - if ever there is a misrepresentation this has got to be it - have been told off to lay off cutting the health budget...

In this day and age ask yourself which channel would you prefer to watch: CNN, Fox, or the CBC or BBC? or Al-Jazeera?

I'll take the last 3 any day over CNN. For one thing, those 3 have their own reporters on the ground in Iraq, unembedded - read; beholden - nd CNN/Fox don't.

For another, what's the difference other than the nationalities, between an American or British PoW/corpse and an Iraqi PoW/corpse. None. Why then is it OK to show Iraqi PoWs and corpses and not American or British PoWs and corpses?

then there's the firing of Peter Arnet by NBC
http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/...ett/index.html

"On Sunday, NBC News had issued a statement supporting Arnett, saying that Arnett gave the interview to Iraqi TV as a "professional courtesy" and that his remarks "were analytical in nature and were not intended to be anything more."

"But a day later, NBC issued a different statement. "It was wrong for him to grant an interview to state-run Iraqi TV, especially in a time of war." "

Guess what happened between Sunday and Monday. What caused the NBC flip-flop?

NOT

Arnet is guilty of undoing the American 'psy-ops'.

Where is freedom of the press in the US of A now?

I agree with you totally. I assure you.

Except for one basic fact! The CBC is the last bastion of Western Communism!

I agree with the rest of your previous post!

p.s.-All the cases of SARS are linked here to recent trips to China, and immediate family members of those trips. I don't thinks it's a result of Mike, and Ernie's streamlining of the Health System. Any majore budget cuts are thanks to the feds....However...**** flow down hill.....

civiltech,

good grief, we're an agreeable bunch here.

I agree: the final cause of the sad shape the Cdn health system is in is caused by the fed's contribution or lack thereof in contravention of the Canada Health Act wherein the fed and the provinces are s'pose to contribute 50/50. Now it' smore like fed 14%.

It's a bit harse to equate the CBC with communism. If you had written socialism, then I'd agree with you.

In the yes of Dubya and his cohorts Canada IS a hotbed of socialism...

Our healthcare systme is very socialist. Our whole society is very socialist vis a vis the US in case you've forgotten

PK

Some of the provinces didn't help by using the fed health dollars to buy lawn mowers...
