| You learn by being shown the basics and told the theory by someone who already knows, generally in a hands-on setting (watch while they work and give a running commentary, then eventually they are present while you work and are available to answer questions when you run into problems). Eventually you move up to learning by doing (and screwing things up and fixing your mistakes).
At higher levels you can go take the armorer's college course that's taught as part of the USFA coaches college at the Olympic Training Center in the summer. Actually, last year was the first year for it, I just received my info packet for this year (coaches college) and it didn't mention the armorer's college. I hope they're still running it, it looked like a lot of fun and I planned to take it at some point....

| I just got the word from the horse's mouth as it were. I checked with Dan DeChaine and there will be an Armorer's College this year. The 1st and 3rd sessions will be for level 3 and the 2nd session for level 2.
It is one of the best ways to learn and it is very intense hands-on experience. If you want to check with any of the Armorers that went last summer contact me and I will put you in touch.

| Probably the best out there at present is Rudy Volkmann 'Electric Fencing Equipment: How it works, What goes wrong, How to repair it'. It can be obtained at American Fencers Supply. I am sure there are others with it.
That does not mean that will show you everything. It is always good to learn with an established Armorer. Hands-on is very important.
I forgot one of the best resources, American Fencing Magazine, especially if you can find back issues you can borrow. In almost every issue Joe Byrnes put out a little article on Armoring. It is a great resource. Check your local libraries if you are new.

| I forgot that I now sell for 30.00 plus S&H a video tape on basic armoury and trouble shooting. The armourer who is doing the tape is one Ted Li the head armourer for the 96 & 2000 Olympics.
He also is the armourer that trained me many many years ago.
