The Martini Epee Challenge

Read about this event in Fencing to Win by A. T. Simmonds and E. T. Morton.. is it still an ongoing affair? If it is could someone fill me in on it?

Any information is much appreciated

It doesn't happen anymore. Now it's called the Challenge Monal and it is also known as the Paris World Cup.

My understanding is that France banned all alcohol-sponsored event names. So the previous Martini-Rossi Foil is now the CIP (Challenge Internationale Paris), and so on.

Don't know why they still have the Boone's Farm Chianti Classic for the 24-hour LeMans style street racing.

The Martini Epee Challenge used to be held in London, the foil version was in Paris and there was a sabre event as well but I can't remember where. Once Martini wasn't allowed to sponsor the foil event in France they pulled their sponsoship of the other events. The event still limps on under the catchy title "The Epee Club Trophy" but obviously rather lacks the kudos of The Martini Epee Challenge.

Yeah, I think the sabre counterpart was held in Teaneck, New Jersey, and was sposored by Schlitz. The Schlitz Slash-o-Rama, I think it was.

Leave it to the French.

"Martini" as a surname precedes the use of the word as a designation for an alcoholic beverage by several hundred years.

So if someone names a mixed drink "The World Cup", the French immediately ban the phrase?

What if they name the drink "The Foil"?

Oy.

Inq, the french didn't ban the competition name because it alluded to "martini". They banned the sponsor, Martini-Rossi, because they are an alcohol company.

Leave it to an American to get it wrong.

Yes, only James Bond and other subjects of Her Majesty drink Martinis (the cocktail). We French and Italians drink Martini (the brand) it basically tastes like some sort of sweeter wine. Sort of like a port. But it comes in white and red versions.

Eh...then why wasn't it called The Martini-Rossi Cup?

Martini was one of the great sponsors of fencing. From what I undedstand it was the loss of this sponsorship which led the London A grade to be relocated to Glasgow, Scotland. A couple of years ago it made it back to London (well, near to London at least, Rickmansworth) but now it has been struck off the 2004-05 schedule by the FIE in their drive to streamline the World Cup calendar.

I seem to recall as a high school kid, going to the Martini-Rossi competition, which at that time was in the NYAC, here in sunny New York City. I remember watching the epee event, but think there was also a sabre event too. What that some other "Martini-Rossi" competition, unrelated to the one that's segued into a WC?

Okay, that's in France. How about the tournament in America? Did the USFA (or AFLA?) ban it, or did Martini bail out?
