| We're Number 1! We're Number 1! Ok, Keeth is Number 1.
After taking silver at Athens (this guy is now officially "for real"), Keeth is now #1 in the world standings. Pozdniakov won, but he lost some points as his last year's Athens points expired while Keeth earns new one.
Well, lookee here. Six world cups, five top-8, one ninth place, one gold, two silvers, one bronze.
That's some pretty gnarly pickin's.

| 15-12 means that Smart actually won, because, as you know, there's always about 4 points given based on reputation and nationality. :-)
Also, the escrime-info.com commentaries about the Athens WC are all about Smart being up there on the podium and that Smart is now #1 in the world.
And I like the "aqua" interface from the escrime-info website.

| The bout was refereed fairly. Keeth lost, but give him a year or two and he will be beating the Russians also. |

| "The Russians" are not a major concern to Keeth, at least not as a group. I'd say the only real competition to Keeth would be:
Pozdniakov
Covaliu
Tarantino
Nemcsik
and maybe Pillet, Bauer
I'm not including Medina because even though he's my favourite fencer (only top 20 fencer who's short) he's sorta scammed his way into the top 5 by winning the Tabriz G.P.
If Keeth actually went to Tabriz next year he'd have 48 points in the bag, easy. Of course, I know Americans don't like the prospect of travelling to Iran, but who knows, maybe next year the middle east will be all calm.
edit: I forgot to say "congratulations, Keeth" but seeing as the probability of Keeth actually reading this forum is pretty much nil, I should change that to "congratulations, Americans."
I knew you'd be the first to get someone up there in MS. I just don't think it's possible for Canada to do so with the current state of non-winter amateur sports in this country.

Paolo | Yup, but the wording of my post was limited to MS (and MF/WF). I think in all other weapons there is potential. Epee is traditionally easier to break into for "underdog nations", at least it has been historically. But the US has recently made great strides in the right-of-way weapons which I think is more of an achievement than having some great results in Men's Epee or some incredible results in Women's Epee.
Cliff Bayer used to be cleaning up internationally, how is he doing these days? US WS is on its way to the top, too, I believe. WF used to be fantastic, but I'm not sure how it is now... is the Rochester Club still going strong?
As for Sherraine, yeah, we're very proud of her. She used to throw pretty good parties, too. I think she lives and trains in Paris nowadays, though. |
