pejorative terms

Just came across this in scanning my copy of "A-Z Fencing"
and thought to share it.

Fluking Iron - Slang for the epee; a highly pejorative term,
originating in the days when there was a tendency for the epee
to be practised by 'men of a certain age' and when, because of
the complete body target and absence of conventions (rules)
dedicated foilists affected to regard such contests as being
governed by chance rather than skill.

Damn supercilious little snots. Wonder what they meant by
'men of a certain age'? .... HRUMPH!

J.

In France, while joking some pretend they are two
sports :
fencing (aka foil) and epee.

Re: pejorative terms

In New Zealand, the national body is moving towards epee (has been for a
while now) as its "easier to do well in (overseas)"

Typical of the French not to realize that NEITHER foil nor epee are
fencing, only sabre is...
