Why is it called Jr Olympics if it's not international? What's the Olympic connection?
A lot of USA Olympic sports call their junior national championships "Junior Olympics". Water polo, volleyball, track and field to name a few.

I think it is because "High School National Championship" was taken.

It gives us parents something to brag about when our kids qualify. It ain't easy being a fencing parent, because most of the other parents don't have any context for what we tell them about our kids' accomplishments. "Junior and Cadet National Event" doesn't really mean anything to them.
