Wanter to buy: fencing dummy Interested in purchasing a fencing dummy. Any suggestions regarding a reputable vendor? Does anyone have one for sale? -

Array A few years ago we bought three dummies from BG. A bit of plywood and some casters for a base and we were good to go. We've been happy with them since and I've seen them at a number of other clubs both before and after our purchase.

There are quite a few with accounts on this site. Many post regularly. Generally speaking, more saber than foil and more foil than epee. Quite a few (who am I kidding? the majority, probably) hold referee ratings.
Best of luck with your search. Take your time. Read carefully. -

Array The best dummies come from this site. Prices are good too. http://www.thearmorersstore.com/ -

Thank you. I contacted them~ -
OP do you fence sabre? just curious, because i was trying to do wall-target drills with a sabre and found out it's impossible to hit the wall with anything other than the point of the sabre. -

Array MikeHarm - Thanks for the shout out!
Startouch - I hope you are enjoying your dummy. Would like some feedback.
Zailemaos - My dummy can be used effectively for saber. -

Hi Mergs,
We assembled the main part of the dummy last night. Will try to figure out the arm later on today. Thank you for mailing it out so fast!

Array No problem. Let me know how the arm went together. And post a pic once you've got it all togetther! -
Quit (no longer with us)
Array I agree with you.

Array Has anyone ever purchased one for home use? I'd like to have something more than a target on the wall for home use but my husband isn't yet sold on the idea. How much floorspace does one of these typically require? -

Array I may be biased because he's my coach, but if you buy The Big Book of Fencing by Rudy Volkmann, you can build your own. There are instructions for building one in the back of the book. Materials + time cost less than it would to buy one ready-assembled.
Plus, if you're really handy, you can customize the build to suit any mount surface you choose. My walls in my house aren't suited to mounting said structure, and I don't have a garage, so what we did was build an over-rail setup between our sunken living room and the raised dining room "loft" area we have. A post and bracket supports the assembly, similar to an "over-the-door" hook hanging device. It works out really well. We use cheap carpet to protect the rails between the loft/living room. When it's not being used, it can be removed and stored in a closet/corner of the room.
Dr. V is also really good about returning e-mail and answering questions you may have in the process. I can also post pictures of this setup if anyone is interested. -

About the protection issue - what if a blade breaks mid-hit, and 15 cm of broken blade flies away? Anyone else in the living room without mask? TV? Laptop? Other non-sturdy stuff?
Have a nice time!

How much floorspace does one of these typically require? The actual footprint is about 4' x 4', but with the blade, it extends to about 4' x 7', plus you need space for yourself. If you would prefer to build it yourself, plans are available for much less than Rudy's book. PM me for details, or follow the link below. Pictures are available there, too. -

Array I've used the volkmann dummy for a while. It was pretty good. It didn't have some features I would of liked such as the epee leg you see on Mergs version. Helped me a lot with working on my foil moves that's for sure. Similar Threads -
