Yeah, I did that once. It was embarrassing. I've seen other refs -- good ones -- do it, too, from time to time. That sort of thing is just a slip of the eyes, not an indication of incompetence.
Do people really think George Kolombatovich, faded from past glory or not, is not up to the challenge of refereeing youth fencing? Give me a break! -

I was merely offering a counter argument to merg's implication that George K was relatively infallible.
I did recently see George forget to reset the clock between pool bouts. The first touch came two seconds in and the clock read 0:59. The fencers obviously share the blame for not bringing it to his attention - the bout ended up at 5-0 (in part due to the losing fencer's perception that time was running out) with about 20 second elapsed. -
