While I'm obviously of the opinion that this is a bit of a sham, I'll be a hypocrite and suggest that if you are going to do this, it would be really cool to have team events for each weapon. If you did this, you could make teams by school, state or region, but there should be some criteria apart from throwing random people on a team.

does askfred allow the organizor to assign age specific criteria or is it a cookie cutter piece or registration software?

at anyrate, events are only as strong as the people who chose to attend, whether they are sanctioned by whatever body that makes you feel good and second year event like this needs some time to develop like most things in US Fencing.

and the whining and crying began right on cue. Almost like it was rehearsed.

While I believe FRED has menus for things like standard restrictions I believe that he's actually pretty flexible in that regard (in fact I believe the default setting is "unrestricted").

The bigger point is I believe JAG is bringing up is that AFAIK the USFA does not recognize "high school student" as a category which can be used to restrict entry to a USFA sanctioned tournament. By that same token a USFA member who otherwise qualifies for a U20 event can not be denied entry to a sanctioned U20 tournament simply because they are not a current high school student (I think that I had a similar discussion with Purple Fencer recently, except that one was related to collegiate events).

Hey Jersey folks. You think you have the closest thing to a national championship? Yeah, why don't you send your kids to Ohio and Prove it. Until Jersey sweeps all the events you only have empty words. And Spray Tan. So much Spray Tan.

I was there last year. It was a well-run event. Lots of good referees, grounded strips, and a good venue. Only thing needed was more fencers.
So, the number 1 men's foilist in the US, last I spoke to him, was still in high school. Will he be attending these 'Championships'?

It sounds like a perfectly good tournament. Why bullsh*t the name?

Hey deadhamlet. Should we send over the the NY Giants as well so they can take on any county college football teams that you might have just to be certain they are world champs? Nobody is saying that NJ should have a national championship anyway. I'm just saying that the way that they are going about it with this tournament, someone could just as easily hold a tournament in Alaska and say its the "real" National HS championship.

Quite right. Putting aside the silly name, it's either a U20, in which case it can be sanctioned, or it's eligibility is limited to high school, in which case it can't be sanctioned. And, if the club and USFA are going to look the other way, or fudge the eligibility criteria, then any club can run a tournament with its own limited eligibility criteria and be sanctioned, which reduces the USFA sanction to a farce.

So do I hear anyone talking about forming a national body to sanction high school fencing tournaments? Or is that too big for anyone of the neysayers to take on, or is it an affront to the void tha USFA seems to see isn't fit to work with in light of trying to develop "Future Stars" who I believe are in the high school ranks. The larger questions regarding the sanctioning of this or any event is whether the sanctioning body gives a darn about anything. Personally the pains that the membership of USFA have endured surprise me, they are the same pains that US Tae kwon do dealt with until the membership became empowered enough to dissolve the old organization and start another that tied in directly with the IOC usurping the old organization and partnering with the AAU. USFA isn't there yet..........anyway enough is enough tournaments, championship or any event is only as strong as the participants that chose to come if Valentina choses to forgo the World Championships isn't it still a world championship--sanctioning aside?

I don't think you can say 'sanctioning aside' when the entire dispute is one of sanctioning.
