Excerpts
241 fencers from 35 countries and 25 national teams are registered for the 2012 edition of trofeo “Carroccio”, a senior men's épée world cup competition and the first event of the 2012 senior season. Nicola Caletti, President of Club Scherma Legnano, organizer of the event said, "... for us this will be a "test event" before a very important date: The European Senior Zonal Championships in Legnano, June 15-20, 2012."
In preparation for the European Championships, starting with this trophy "Carroccio" a "welcome desk" for all participants is set up at Terminal 1 in Malpensa Airport by the Tourism Agency of the Varese Province. Paola Della Chiesa, agency's director, said, "We wanted to start with this collaboration with the LOC of this world cup because we strongly believe in the importance of organizing sport events to promote our territory. This is why we put our office at the airport at the disposal of the LOC together with other initiatives. We believe in the binomial region + sport and the proof is evident with this even filling to capacity the hotels in our area."
Again this year the eight finalists will be paired with a contrada and its standard in the Palio di Legnano[*]. "This is to symbolize the strong and unbreakable connection between the town of Legnano and this event," said Renzo Brignoli, alderman responsible for sports in the town administration.
The program includes two days for the individual event (qualification on Friday, DE table of 64 on Saturday) and on Sunday, the team competition, the fourth edition of the trophy "Carlo Carnevali" in memory of the deceased CT of Italian épée.
Italy as the hosting country will field twenty competitors, from the 2011 world champion Paolo Pizzo and the Olympic champion Matteo Tagliariol all the way to four of the most promising junior fencers.
This first stage of the 2012 World Cup can be followed on FederScherma TV, the FIS Web TV produced by Athleticom and on RaiSport 1 and RaiSport 2 who will broadcast the final bouts of the indivdual event on Saturday (tape delayed to 10:30 pm on RaiSport 1) and the team competition (live from 4:00 pm and tape delayed at 10:30 pm on RaiSport 1).

Dmitriy Karuchenko (UKR) is the winner of the 35th edition of Trofeo "Carroccio" the first senior event of the 2012 ME season.
Excerpts from here Dmitriy Karuchenko (UKR) winner of Trofeo "Carroccio"
The spectators at PalaBorsani, the venue of this event were all for the Ukrainian who beat in the final the French Robeiri 15-8. Bronze medals Zawrotniak (Pol) and Borel (FRA).
Matteo Tagliariol, first of the Italians finished fifth losing 10-15 against Robeiri. His loss was impacted by an injury to his right index suffered in the table of 16. After a first X-ray diagnosis it seems that there is no fracture. In the 16 Tagliariol eliminated Grumier (FRA) 15-14 after coming from behind and with the support of the local fans.
Paolo Pizzo was stopped in the 64 by Shabalin (KAZ) 15-14. "I am sorry for the poor performance," said Pizzo, "but a lot had to do with a tendinites in my right hand mwhich nagged me in the preparation for this event." The French angle
Excerpts from here
With his finish in second place in Legnano, Ulrich Robeiri is back in the race for the Olympic qualification. Ditto for Yannick Borel and his third place.
Robeiri went through the tableau like a cannon ball and only Dmitriy Karuchenko could stop his élan with a final score of 15-8.
Ulrich Robeiri is back in the race!
From Escrime-info, Post #8, before we get the analysis from Craig, this is how the French see it.
Before the next two world cup events (individual) and one grand prix for the qualification for London the situation looks like this.
1 - P.Pizzo (ITA) 152 pts
2 - F.Kauter (SUI) et M.Heinzer (SUI) 123
...
6 - G.Grumier (FRA) 105
10 - Y.Borel (FRA) 95
13 - R.Gustin (FRA) 85
26 - U.Robeiri (FRA) 57
27 - JM.Lucenay (FRA) 56
For the time being the max for France to qualify are two epeists which now are Grumier and Borel. Gustin is very close and Robeiri is slowly but surely progressing. It is well to know something of the manners of various peoples, in order more sanely to judge our own, and that we do not think that everything against our modes is ridiculous, and against reason, as those who have seen nothing are accustomed to think.
