    Non-combativity... the early years

I know this has been beaten to death, but for all of you who didn't see this ten years ago, I've posted a video of two encounters in the the 2001 final match of MET.

It might explain some of the FIE's motives for the spate of NC rulings..

I've added some inane typed commentary to keep you awake.

Enjoy it while it's up there.

You've created the fencing equivalent of Manos: Hands of Fate- well nigh unwatchable without the MST3K commentary.

    And even then...it's still epee.

The inane commentary was the best part.

Booing haters don't appreciate the subtle layers of strategy going on in those bouts.

Actually, that just looks like epee fencing to me. Just slightly wider distance.

Or, at least one of your assumptions is faulty.

I saw an epeeist taking a nap at a NAC once. I guess that he must have been channeling both Sun Tzu and von Clausewitz at the time.

Thanks for posting that. I had managed to live this long without being subjected to it.

For the next assignment - find the foil bout(s) that prompted Roch to push to expand foil target area.

    Hey...

My pleasure. It was entertaining in a train wreck sort of way. Leave it to Loit to make it the circus that it was.

As for foil, just look at any competition where there's a sub 5 foot foilist wearing what appears to be their lame from when they were 10 years old and their father's mask. There remains a strip of valid target about 2 inches in height.

Actually, I nominate Vezzali with her large bib and odd head bob which she uses very effectively to cause attacks to go off target during her counter attacks.

This video should be used in the case to ban french grips. They create a situation where the ideal tactic is to wait, wait, wait and pick off the opponent.

Can't we just ban French epeeists, and give someone else a chance of winning a team competition?

Epeeist on the right was thinking: "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today".

    My God....that was boring.
Need fencing equipment? See me at H.O.M. Fencing Supply

Going to your first tournament? Read "Choose yer weapon, Laddie (or: Dude, where's my foil?)"

Considering some of the more recent foil bouts that I've seen where the entire defensive tactic is to crouch as low as possible so that the lame on the chest is as covered (though not as defined by the rules) as possible? I think there would be a lot of bouts that would support the rule change.
It's all fun and games until someone loses a tip screw.

(sigh.) A "couple" of years ago (when I became a "real" veteran), a coach I am friends with offered to teach me sabre. (I had actually started fencing -- three or so years before -- in an "adult class" for sabre, since that's what my daughter fenced. The other five women dropped out after two weeks, so there went the class...The next "adult class" was "epee," and here I am). After TWO lessons with my encouraging sabre "vet" coach, I told her: "This is not a different 'weapon.' This is a different 'SPORT.' I don't have the time or money to learn both!" I sometimes think this is the 'disconnect' on this site. "Fencing".net is too embracing. These are three DIFFERENT sports. (Well, I know absolutely nothing about foil, but I would imagine the same thing would apply.) We should have epee.net., sabre.net, foil, net. : )
