AFAIK - there are 2 former Fencing World Champions who reside in NorCal. Feel free to replace "of" with "about". -

I'd still disagree to a certain degree.
My first Coach was a World Champion - very , very, very long time ago - but a Champ nevertheless. He specialized in bringing up kids to a mid-level/better fencer ; if you got there - you went to another city to a Coach who specialized in creating masters; if you were lucky to get on the national team radar - you'd get another Coach.
In US most of the Coaches try to bring the kids up from diapers to Olympic Champions - since the remuneration system is completely different - thus you have Coaches who should be polishing techniques of kids in top 10 on C/J/S point list giving lessons to little brats that will quit in a month.
IMHO a World Champion will always make a great coach as long as he's not a nutcase, alcoholic, criminal, or insert your own adjective - question is on which level.
Some extremely gifted Coaches can work on all 4-5 levels and with both genders - but there are not that many of them. Similar Threads -
