I actually don't see a lot of poor sportsmanship here. Sure it's a little cheeky, but why does anyone think you should be able to end the period early?
I realise that plenty of refs allow this, but it's really up to the ref and not up to the fencers. You still fence until the ref says halt. If you start saluting, and theres time on the clock, expect that your opponent might hit you.
I also don't understand how this can happen. I goof off a lot at the club. I've tried a lot of stupid hits, ("Shoes untied", "Dropped your pocket", "Mantis Style" etc..) - it's actually really hard to make an opening on your opponent with something like that. How close was the opponent when he dropped his guard?
I dunno, fence until the halt. (and certainly don't take off your mask) -

Array I used to be a fencer that saluted before the end of round once, then I took an epee to the knee. -

I've seen a SCA fencer use a "Jones" on his off-hand. The puppet was used for an off-hand parry and took 3 minutes to die. Right-of-way doesn't matter if there is a single light. -

But if he could actually manipulate the puppet at the same time he was doing blade actions with the other hand, it would be truly amazing coordination. -

that's very interesting, yeah never let your guard down when that close... I don't think I've had anyone salute me 'til halt was called. As we can see, the Korean doesn't return the salute until it's like 1 second or maybe even less. -

Array What Allen said.
However, I have seen some reasonably high level fencers fall for similar tactics. There was a big regional event a few years back where a fencer, near the end of regulation, pointed to the clock, the other guy turned and looked, then the pointer fleched and hit to win the bout. And those were both top 30 in the country epee fencers. I've also seen a top 15 foil fencer stop, relax, the other guy does the same, first guy fleches.
You can definitely be in the top 30 in the country in your weapon and still do dumb things from time to time... "Sir, didn't I parry"
"You didn't take advantage of his blade enough, so no."
(I guess i should have romanced it a bit more..." -

Not sure what was worse there....losing in the first place, or falling for the proverbial "oldest trick in the book!" -
