Colorado Fencing Club Hi, Folks,
I am moving to Denver in February, and am looking for a good club in the area. I want a club that produces good competitors and has lots of opportunity to train. I am a foilist but may branch out into epee. Suggestions appreciated! Thank you. -

In addition to Northern Colo Fencers, South Denver Fencing Academy has good, competitive, and active foil and epee program. Denver Fencing Center teaches all weapons. Colorado Fencing Academy used to be solely sabre, but now teaches foil and epee, and the Denver Fencing Academy is a sabre and epee club ( and I've heard may branch out into foil in the future). There are other clubs also, but I am not familiar with their classes.
With the number of clubs in the metro area, I'd suggest you visit them all and see which coaches you like, and what members you feel most comfortable with. (Personally I find some more focused on the youth fencer than adult fencers.) You may just start with which club is closest to you. -

Array I'm sure that if the OP pays Gary for foil lessons, they will get the same excellent standard of training. Not so much bouting, but honestly I'm not convinced that bouting is as necessary in the earlier stages of development (though I may be flamed to a crisp for saying so.) I think it depends on the extent to which one subscribes to the theory that "technical excellence is the antecedent of tactical creativity", which is an excellent quote and a view I've held myself for a while. That said, looking back at how I learned to fence and having had several discussions about the topic I'm not sure how true it is in the strictest of senses. That said it's definitely not an issue one would have while taking lessons with Gary and it's more of a "we should discuss this over a beer next event" sort of thing. Personally, I can't think of going to anyone other than Gary even if I did my bouting elsewhere but I don't know much about the other coaches at the other clubs. I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.

Next time you should specify useful suggestions. Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array Cannot recommend highly enough: Northern Colorado Fencers (top-notch foil/epee), and Fencing Academy of Denver (if you would consider sabre and seeking top-notch instruction).
Now, this is very very important. For you and your loved ones.
If anyone comes up to you and talks to you about planets and nuclear energy, and installing satellite reception in your skull and electricity in your teeth... RUN. Run like hell. It helps to carry garlic spray/strobe lights with you to competitions during first year in Denver. And water pistol during second year...
... might want to make sure your shots are up to date also, just in case there's a bite.

Reason: Can never be too careful...
When you have three Romulan Warbirds blocking the escape route, Worf has an emotional breakdown about his childhood toy, Riker announces he's gay, Data's positronic brain gets a virus, and Geordi quits because he's had just one too many imminent warp core breach.... Just sit back, breathe, and follow these simple steps: -

Do any of these clubs have open fencing? I have a friend who is moving to Boulder that is a Vet age saber/foil fencer. He's not interested in competition but wants to get together with other fencers for friendly bouting and improve his skills. -

"You didn't take advantage of his blade enough, so no."
(I guess i should have romanced it a bit more..." -

Re: open fencing.
Check their websites, but to my recollection, most the local clubs here have open fencing -usually on Friday nights.
FYI, South Denver Fencing is in Centennial, and while FAD is in Littleton, it is just north of Highlands Ranch. Both are close to major highways - SDFA is right off I-25 and FAD is right off C470. A list of clubs and their websites is on the division webpage coloradofencing.net. -
Thanks for the info pacer. I'll pass it along to my friend. -

Array One more vote for Gary and NCF in Boulder. Fenced there from 1995-1999 and I can't say enough good things about the program. -

Array Drop-in fencing is ad-hoc at NCF. there's free fencing most nights. I have been fencing on Wednesday nights for a while, now. We get some foil fencers, though mostly at the vet level.... -
