| Good movie I just finished watching "By The Sword", a 1994 (I think) "fascinating, fast-paced story of retribution and revenge in the world of fencing." I thought it was really good! And it really is about fencing (quite accurate with only a little bit of common movie 'sword fight')
Has anyone else seen this movie? What did you think about it?

| I love watching the evil fencing master "inspire" his students. After I see that film I'm always tempted to finish a lesson by hissing "You're pathetic!" to the student.
I still don't get the part at the end where they're swinging epee blades at each other using two hands on the grips, but hey, you can't have everything. Come to think of it, I also liked the way he gets a date by explaining that he just got out of jail for murder, and that he's living under an assumed name. That line never worked for me, somehow... |

| Fentsing in a good moovie? Well, yeah yes, there is a real low point a da movie when the coach and his rival throw down their sabers, turn around, and break wind they break like wind at each other, where does it all come from what did they eat beforehand was it a big bowl of beans or was it just a stage effeckt. Well, I did enjoy other parts of the movie it shows a good level of hie-standerd fentsing, popow cstanet a popoe

| It was better than what it was originally edited. Dan and me work on the setting up the machines and all. Some of what you don't see to clearly in the movie are inside jokes. They had posters all over the set advertising the 'Nationals'. I received one of them. Here is the joke. The Nationals was being held for two weeks in November, during the hight of the Basketball season in none other than Madison Square Gardens. Another fun was spotting the extras. They were mostly from Westside Fencing Center. A very recognizable one was Mage with his long stragly hair. He has played homeless a number of times.

| Sabre girl,
Look at the thread I started called 'The BEST fencing movies".
Sorry, DHC Jr,
Those of us in Vancouver who saw that movie thought it was awful. Not awsome...
Perhaps you should sugges that they make a 'director's cut' with all the in-jokes and out-takes at the end, a la Jackie Chan's movies.

| It doesn't bother me. I just said it was better than originally edited. I never said I thought it was good. The part I like is just recognizing the little areas like the Armory and the people. It is not on Dan's or mine top 100 movies. I will say it is much better than Battlefield Earth, but even the Dental films in High School might be considered better than that.

| It was a train wreck. It was hard to watch but hard to turn your head, so I didn't even finish it. The only merit it brings some kind of publicity to fencing, and as we all know, we need all the publicity we can get.
What would be nice to see in a movie would be something that explains right of way. It's not a hard topic to learn, but it's hard to see (especially if you don't know anything about fencing (or some National rated Refs )). At least this way, it would be a first step in getting the masses to learn. |

matt | I think you're exaggerating. Or you didn't see Battlefield Earth, or The Postman, or the remake of the Haunting, or Highlander 2 or 3, or Starship Troopers, or Dungeons + Dragons, or...well, pretty much 80% of the movies made in the last 10 years. There's been so much junk out of Hollywood lately that By the Sword, corny as it was, wouldn't make the 10 worst films of all time by a longshot. |

matt | So, Matt, you haven't seen Ishtar, with Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty in the Sahara...
It's worse than water World.
