Negrini foil/saber sockets

This is more to satisfy my curiosity than anything else...
Why are the tang-holes on the Negrini foil/saber sockets so small? I've hand to file a bigger hole to fit the tangs of most of my blades through- both foil and saber and various types.
Is there a reason for this (other than "that's the way they are made.")?

The Italian forges (at least historically) have had smaller tangs then the French forges. If the hole is to big for those tangs, then you have the problem of the connector shifting. You can always make the whole bigger as you are doing, but you have a little more difficulty making it smaller. Why they had the smaller tang, I am not sure.
