First, maraging steel is forged in a way that yields a stronger blade -- the common quote is that they last 4 to 5 times longer than non-maraging blades.
Second, the crystal structure of the steel is such that when they do break, they break with a flat end rather than a jagged one. Blunter. Safer.
I made the wholesale switch to only FIE (i.e., maraging) blades after a close call. I consider it a courtesy to my opponent, but then hey, that's just me.
