    what's better?

I've been wondering, is it better to have a lot of lessons or to have lots of combats?

    Both:

take as many lessons as you can, then use the bouts to practice and refine the skills learned in the lessons. Even if you lose many of the practice bouts, you'll groove the techniques and make them work better for you as you continue.
