Array Painted mask this weekend Seen at the San Bernardino event this past weekend, courtesy of a fencer from Cour de Lion in San Diego...probably the prettiest mask I've seen in awhile. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...p/IMG_0162.jpg
'Course, as FormerFencer told me when I showed her the pic at Orange Coast the following day "She'd better be able to back that up!" -

Array Not even going to look. My blood pressure doesn't need the boost. Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array I like it. No backing up needed. If you give a man a fire, he is warm for the night.

Array I think it's very pretty and a nice design.
I'm kind of curious as to what's meant by backing it up though. The world never seems so clear as it does through the mesh of a fencing mask.

Array I really don't remember being that nice. "That was so close to being good!" "Name a shrub after me -- something prickly and hard to eradicate" -

There's a certain component of the fencing community that feels strongly about things like painted masks, eye-burning sock colors, bandanas, and generally wonky behavior/fashion decisions. (Fuzzy blade covers, perhaps.) The consensus is generally that if you can win the majority of events you enter (Basically if you're a serious bad@$$) then you can wear whatever you like. This is called "backing it up." -

(edit: You should encourage him to get the awesome smiley instead though) When I was shopping for a mask, I ran across this yellow mask . Nearly got the yellow one and I would have painted the eyes and mouth. -

Do they really look like that, or are they uniformly colored and just look patterned because of photographic artefacts introduced by the mesh? Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem

With the big thighed women I like to see them "back that up". 12th out of 16 (4th in a pool of 5. Beaten by a teammate in her first DE. Got a pounding according to the Ask Fred results...probably a 1st year fencer. I hadn't seen a lot of the CdL people before)...D1 tourney (1 C, 1 D, 14 U). A fairly weak event, but the strongest one in San Bernardino in the last couple of years...sabre even more so (15 people, D1 event). Epee's been the heavy one for the last 2-3 years...only one time in that period we haven't had an A2 event. -
