    Resources for larger fencers?

I am I guess what you would call in cycling and running part of the "Clydesdale Class". Larger than average sized particpants of sports usually associated with slimmer athletes. I am 250+lbs and fenced in high school 20yrs ago and want to start up again for exercise and fun. I remember my coach taking me down to Santelli's before they moved to Jersey and getting fitted for a lame. It was the largest they made back then ('83). Anyway enough rambling. Has anyone ever heard of "Heavyweight" fencers?I was wondering if there were any custom outfitters around that would accomodate bigger fencers? I have been out of the loop too long.

Fencers come in all shapes and sizes, just go to a national-level competition and you'll see a very diverse group of people. And it seems to me most vendors have a quite a wide range of sizes for uniforms. Just check their websites, most have charts that help you find the right size, and custom fitting if necessary.

Brother I hear ya talking... I am 270 lbs (down from 305) and I just recently entered my first tournament in 10 yrs... I won! As for equipment, I ordered my stuff in one shot from Uhlmann in Germany. I had the lame and kickers tailor made for 15% more. Still a bargain!

Now that the lbs are coming off the lame will eventualy look like a tent but hey I am fencing and having a blast!

Check em out they can hook you up cheaper than anyone else.

Thank you very much for replying! I will try look for Uhlmann on the web. I really miss it and not a day goes by where I am not boring my wife coworkers about how this big guy from the Bronx was captain of his fencing team so many eons ago. Again thanx for info.

    p.s.
congrats on tournament win! Where was it?

I am 6'5" and weigh in at about 290. Fencing is the True sport for me and I am hopelessly addicted. Uhlmann in Germany makes the best stuff at the best prices. Being Uhlmann from a stateside shower is asking to be ripped however so make sure you go to the German site.

If you want a stateside vendor Blue Gauntlet and Triplette both do reasonable work and have great customer service. Blue Gauntlet has the fastest shipping I have ever seen. Blade makes custom gear but the service and support is sporadic at best. If you just want to tell someone to "get me this, for this much” try Justin Meehan at Bladerunners. He is a good guy, a great fencer/coach, and happens to run his own supply business.

You can find the links for them all and more at www.strangebreezes.com/cvillefencing on the links page. It is my club website so I am a little biased but they have some good links to some good suppliers!

    Good luck!
