    D-ring torn off

At practice another fencer stepped on the reel cord while I was plugged in and moving forward. My jacket of a few years said "Enough!" and the cloth holding my D-ring ripped open. My coach recommended that I sew some velcro on there and attach the D-ring that way, but I remember a fencer I met once that had some sort of plastic clamp device that attached directly to the jacket. Does anyone know where I can get one of those? Should I just go with the velcro? Other solutions?
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but why pick just one?

Replace the cloth with elastic and sew it back down yourself....I've had to do that....not that hard.

Going to your first tournament? Read "Choose yer weapon, Laddie (or: Dude, where's my foil?)"

Try glue. It was the night before a tournament and my D-ring fell off, so I hot glue gunned it down in 30 seconds and it's actually held for the last 1 1/2 years.

In a pinch you can even sew one side of the D-ring directly to the jacket (best done somewhere along the bottom edge of the jacket, with at least a dozen loops of thread wrapping around the flat side of the D-ring and through the jacket).

Just make sure that you pick a location that's easy to reach because without a strap in there there won't be much flexibility.

Here's what a google search for "plastic quick-release clip" turned up:

Also known as a "parachute buckle." You can get them at some fabric stores (JoAnn's, for example)

In a pinch, you can also hang one of those circular key-ring thingies on the buckle that fastens the groin strap.

This is why I always keep a couple of single-use sized packets of unwaxed dental floss and self-threading needles in the armory kit. Easy to either sew the tab back on or sew the D-ring to the jacket if things give way in the middle of a tournament.
